Powertrain Build Supervisor

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Powertrain Build Supervisor is responsible for leading, optimizing, and scaling powertrain assembly operations. This includes supervising the build of internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid systems, electric drive units, transmissions, and other powertrain modules. The role demands a high level of technical expertise, leadership, and operational excellence to ensure quality, efficiency, and adherence to program timelines. The supervisor will drive cross-functional coordination, continuous improvement, and team development across the entire build process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee end-to-end powertrain assembly operations, from subcomponent preparation to final integration and testing.

  • Lead and mentor a team of supervisors, technicians, and operators to meet production targets and quality metrics.

  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, supply chain, and program teams for product launches, changes, and troubleshooting.

  • Ensure compliance with all SOPs, work instructions, quality control standards, and torque traceability.

  • Identify and drive continuous improvement projects to reduce cycle time, improve first-pass yield, and increase productivity.

  • Monitor daily KPIs (output, OEE, defects, downtime) and initiate corrective actions as needed.

  • Ensure safety, 5S, and ergonomic compliance across workstations.

  • Coordinate introduction of new tools, fixtures, and equipment and lead ramp-up for new powertrain programs.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in powertrain assembly process flow and failure modes.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Complex Powertrain Assembly Supervision
(Lead integration of ICE, EV, or hybrid powertrains, including high-voltage components and transmission systems)

  • Production Planning & Execution
(Translate build plans into line execution, align resources, and balance production across multiple lines or shifts)

  • Cross-functional Collaboration
(Coordinate with design, validation, and supply chain teams to address quality, design-for-assembly, and parts availability)

  • Quality Control & Regulatory Compliance
(Oversee quality gate inspections, ensure compliance with ISO/TS16949 standards, and reduce internal and external defects)

  • Lean Manufacturing & Operational Excellence
(Implement lean systems such as takt time optimization, SMED, value stream mapping, and Poka-Yoke)

  • Team Leadership & Skill Development
(Develop team leaders and high-potential technicians, create training plans, and support talent retention)

  • Program Launch & Engineering Change Management
(Manage pilot builds, PPAP support, and implementation of ECNs or product upgrades)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Production Engineering.

  • 8+ years of experience in powertrain manufacturing or mechanical assembly leadership.

  • Deep knowledge of powertrain components (engines, gearboxes, electric motors, drivetrains).

  • Strong ability to interpret CAD drawings, BOMs, process documents, and torque standards.

  • Proficient with ERP, MES, and digital manufacturing systems.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with EV or hybrid powertrain manufacturing.

  • Certified in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or similar.

  • Proven track record in launching new programs and leading cross-functional teams.

  • Strong communication, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills.
