Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Power Distribution and Relay Systems Manager is responsible for leading the design, deployment, and maintenance of power distribution networks and protective relay systems across the organization or project. The role focuses on ensuring reliable, efficient, and compliant electrical power systems for industrial facilities, utilities, or infrastructure projects.

Key Focus Areas:

1. Power Distribution System Design & Oversight

  • Lead the planning and implementation of LV, MV, and HV distribution systems for industrial plants, substations, and commercial buildings.

  • Ensure electrical load balancing, fault analysis, arc flash studies, and power quality assurance.

2. Relay Protection and Control Systems

  • Design and configure protective relaying schemes for transformers, generators, switchgear, and feeders.

  • Oversee relay settings, coordination studies, and logic development using tools like SEL AcSELerator, ABB CAP, or GE Enervista.

3. Maintenance & Reliability Engineering

  • Develop preventive maintenance schedules and reliability strategies for switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, and relays.

  • Implement condition-based monitoring (CBM), diagnostics, and root cause failure analysis.

4. System Commissioning & Testing

  • Supervise field commissioning, relay testing (secondary injection, primary injection), and functional validation of power protection systems.

  • Ensure compliance with IEEE, IEC, and NEC/NFPA standards.

5. Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all systems comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., OSHA, NERC, ISO 50001, IEEE 1584).

  • Drive safety initiatives such as arc flash mitigation, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and grounding systems verification.

6. Team Leadership and Development

  • Manage a team of electrical engineers, relay technicians, and maintenance personnel.

  • Provide training in electrical safety, relay testing procedures, SCADA integration, and fault diagnosis.

7. SCADA and Power Monitoring Integration

  • Integrate distribution systems with SCADA, EMS, and DCS for real-time control, metering, and event logging.

  • Work with IT/OT teams on cybersecurity, network protocols, and data acquisition.

8. Project Management

  • Oversee power distribution projects including budgeting, scheduling, procurement, and vendor coordination.

  • Participate in project risk assessments and mitigation planning.

9. Sustainability and Power Optimization

  • Support energy efficiency initiatives, renewable integration, and demand-side management.

  • Lead upgrades of legacy systems to smart grid technologies and digital relays.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience:

    • 8–12+ years in power distribution and protection systems, with at least 3–5 years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.

  • Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of electrical design software (ETAP, SKM, CYME).

    • Proficient in protective relay settings and testing equipment (Omicron, Doble, Megger).

    • Familiarity with smart grid concepts, SCADA integration, and IEC 61850.
