Job Title: Pipeline Control Systems Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Pipeline Control Systems Engineer is responsible for independently managing the maintenance, optimization, and troubleshooting of control systems in pipeline operations. This role involves handling SCADA system configurations, integrating new control devices, and ensuring the reliability of safety-critical systems. The engineer contributes to operational efficiency by leading medium-scale projects, analyzing system performance, and mentoring junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

System Maintenance and Optimization:

  • Perform advanced maintenance and calibration of control devices, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, actuators, and temperature sensors.
  • Analyze SCADA system data to optimize pipeline operations and ensure consistent performance.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and enhance reliability.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex system issues using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for recurring issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure long-term system stability and performance.

System Integration and Upgrades:

  • Lead the integration and commissioning of new control devices and systems, ensuring compatibility with SCADA platforms.
  • Validate and test system upgrades to meet operational and safety standards.
  • Plan and execute medium-scale system retrofitting projects in collaboration with operations and technical teams.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all control system activities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and audits to identify and mitigate potential hazards in pipeline operations.
  • Validate the functionality of emergency shutdown and alarm systems to ensure readiness during critical situations.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of calibration data, maintenance logs, and system configurations.
  • Prepare technical reports on system performance, troubleshooting outcomes, and improvement recommendations.
  • Contribute to the refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on operational insights.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Act as a liaison between junior staff and senior management for technical issues and project updates.
  • Lead training sessions for junior staff to enhance their technical knowledge and skill sets.

Collaboration and Project Management:

  • Work closely with operations, safety, and engineering teams to align control system activities with organizational objectives.
  • Manage medium-scale projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with budget and quality standards.
  • Communicate effectively with vendors and external stakeholders to resolve technical issues and procure equipment.

Key Focus Areas:

  • System Optimization: Maintain and optimize SCADA and pipeline control systems for peak performance.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Address complex issues and ensure system reliability through diagnostics and root cause analysis.
  • Safety and Compliance: Enforce adherence to safety protocols and validate safety-critical systems.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: Lead and guide junior staff while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA systems, DCS platforms, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, HART).
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for addressing complex pipeline control issues.
  • Proficiency in the configuration and integration of control devices with SCADA systems.
  • In-depth understanding of safety regulations and risk management practices in pipeline operations.
  • Project management skills for handling medium-scale system upgrades and retrofits.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in SCADA systems, process automation, or safety instrumentation (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in pipeline control systems, SCADA/DCS monitoring, or similar roles.
  • Proven ability to independently manage complex maintenance tasks and medium-scale projects.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, thermal cameras, and vibration analyzers.
  • Proficiency in SCADA platforms like Siemens WinCC, ABB, or Honeywell Experion.
  • Familiarity with predictive maintenance tools and advanced analytics for system monitoring.
