The Senior Pipefitter is a technical expert in the installation, inspection, and repair of high-pressure steam and auxiliary piping systems aboard ships and in marine yard settings. This role requires in-depth knowledge of marine piping codes, system layouts, thermal expansion practices, and Class certification requirements. The senior pipefitter leads complex installation projects, mentors junior team members, troubleshoots piping issues during commissioning, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Lead the installation and alignment of steam, condensate, and auxiliary fluid piping systems on marine vessels, including high-pressure lines, expansion joints, and thermal loops.
Read and interpret complex P&IDs, ISO drawings, spool sheets, and class society specifications (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s).
Supervise or perform precision cutting, fitting, threading, beveling, and support installation for a wide range of pipe materials including CS, SS, Cu-Ni, and alloy steel.
Coordinate with ship engineers, welders, mechanical teams, and QA personnel to ensure accurate system integration, support placement, and stress mitigation.
Lead and document hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, flushing procedures, leak detection, and repair follow-ups.
Evaluate thermal expansion issues, guide on bracket placement, and verify operational clearances in confined marine spaces.
Interface with classification society inspectors and ensure systems are compliant with IMO, SOLAS, and flag state regulations.
Identify material discrepancies, layout challenges, or system defects, and implement corrective actions with minimal rework.
Mentor mid-level and junior pipefitters, delegate tasks, and oversee workmanship inspections.
Support project managers and marine engineers in system commissioning, retrofitting, and emergency shutdown repairs.
Complex steam and auxiliary piping system leadership in shipboard environments
Code and class-compliant installation and testing (ABS, DNV, IMO)
Troubleshooting and integration of thermal piping systems into propulsion and support equipment
Mentorship, team coordination, and quality control
Education:
Trade certification or diploma in Pipefitting, Marine Engineering, or Mechanical Trades
Additional training in marine regulations, pressure systems, or supervisory skills (preferred)
Experience:
7+ years of experience in pipefitting, with at least 4 years in the marine industry focusing on steam and high-pressure systems
Experience with both new build and retrofit/repair scenarios on naval or commercial vessels
Technical Skills:
Deep knowledge of marine piping layouts, Class society rules (ABS, DNV, etc.), and installation practices
Expertise in thermal expansion joint installation, steam trap systems, condensate recovery, and vibration control
Proficient in tool use, blueprint interpretation, pressure testing procedures, and bracketing design
Familiarity with working in confined spaces, dry docks, offshore vessels, and during live system transitions
Soft Skills:
Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills
High attention to detail and safety awareness
Ability to work under pressure and manage priorities in shipyard or onboard environments
Team coordination and reporting skills for work packs and task completion
