The Mid-Level Pipefitter is responsible for the installation, alignment, repair, and testing of steam lines and auxiliary piping systems aboard marine vessels or in shipyard environments. This role involves interpreting complex piping drawings, performing precision pipefitting work with limited supervision, and ensuring that systems meet marine regulatory standards (ABS, DNV, IMO). The position requires solid hands-on experience and the ability to work efficiently on new builds, retrofits, or maintenance projects.
Interpret and work from detailed piping isometrics, P&IDs, and installation drawings for steam and auxiliary systems.
Perform cutting, threading, bending, and fitting of high-pressure steam pipes, condensate lines, and auxiliary piping using manual and power tools.
Install flanges, gaskets, valves, reducers, elbows, and pipe supports with proper alignment and torqueing methods.
Conduct pre-installation inspections, verify material compatibility, and resolve layout or fit-up challenges.
Supervise or assist in hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing, including documentation of results and leak checks.
Collaborate with welders, mechanical fitters, and marine engineers to ensure seamless integration of piping with propulsion and utility systems.
Ensure compliance with marine standards such as IMO, SOLAS, Class rules (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s), and shipyard specifications.
Maintain safe working practices, especially during hot work, confined space, and pressurized system tasks.
Train or mentor junior pipefitters or apprentices on basic techniques, tool use, and safe practices.
Troubleshoot piping misalignments or operational issues during commissioning or repair.
Mid-level steam and auxiliary pipe installation and testing
Compliance with marine codes and shipyard standards
Accurate reading of technical drawings and material specifications
Collaboration during commissioning, retrofitting, or emergency repairs
Education:
Technical diploma or trade certification in Pipefitting, Marine Mechanical Systems, or related field
Additional training in marine safety or code compliance (preferred)
Experience:
3–6 years of marine or industrial pipefitting experience, including steam and high-temperature systems
Demonstrated work experience in shipyards, dry docks, or onboard vessels
Technical Skills:
Proficient in pipe preparation, layout, and fit-up for steam, seawater, fuel oil, and lube oil systems
Skilled with pipefitting tools, measuring devices, beveling machines, threading machines, and alignment tools
Familiar with marine piping codes and class society requirements (ABS, DNV, IMO, etc.)
Understanding of pipe stress, thermal expansion allowances, and bracketing principles
Ability to assist in documentation for pressure testing and system acceptance
Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail and jobsite discipline
Ability to work independently or lead small teams
Good problem-solving and communication skills
Commitment to safety and marine regulatory compliance
