Job Title: Pipefitter – Steam Lines and Auxiliary Systems (Marine Industry)

Job Summary:

The Junior Pipefitter supports the installation, alignment, and maintenance of steam piping, valves, and auxiliary systems onboard vessels or within marine engine rooms and fabrication yards. Under the guidance of senior pipefitters and supervisors, this role is responsible for cutting, fitting, assembling, and testing steam and fluid-carrying pipelines, ensuring compliance with marine standards and safety protocols. The position is ideal for hands-on technicians starting their careers in shipboard mechanical systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the assembly and installation of steam pipes, valves, flanges, strainers, and expansion joints for propulsion and auxiliary systems.

  • Measure, mark, cut, thread, and bend piping materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel alloys.

  • Follow isometric drawings, P&IDs, and pipe routing plans to ensure accurate layout and positioning.

  • Support pipe alignment and bracket installation to minimize vibration and thermal stress.

  • Prepare and assist with pressure tests, hydrostatic tests, and leak checks on completed pipe systems.

  • Use hand tools, power tools, and welding prep equipment safely and correctly.

  • Maintain tools, work areas, and material inventories in accordance with shipyard or vessel standards.

  • Comply with safety procedures for hot work, confined spaces, and handling of high-pressure systems.

  • Learn to interpret marine piping codes (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s) and shipboard installation best practices.

  • Support installation tasks during dry-dock or newbuild projects under direction from senior staff.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Basic installation of steam and auxiliary fluid lines

  • Pipefitting under supervision using marine drawings and standards

  • Preparation for pressure testing and system alignment

  • Safe tool use and marine worksite safety compliance

Qualifications & Skills:

Education:

  • High school diploma or technical training certificate in Pipefitting, Marine Engineering, or Mechanical Trades (required)

  • Vocational coursework in shipbuilding or mechanical systems (preferred)

Experience:

  • 0–2 years of experience in mechanical or marine pipefitting (apprenticeship or internship experience acceptable)

  • Exposure to shipyard, dry-dock, or industrial plant environments is beneficial

Technical Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of pipe materials, fittings, and installation techniques

  • Ability to use pipe cutters, benders, threading machines, and measurement tools

  • Understanding of basic mechanical assembly and torque procedures

  • Familiarity with marine piping systems (steam, condensate, seawater, lube oil, etc.) is a plus

Soft Skills:

  • Good communication and teamwork skills

  • Eagerness to learn and follow direction

  • Physically fit to work in confined or elevated shipboard spaces

  • Safety-first attitude and awareness of marine hazards
