NVH Engineer (Noise, Vibration and Harshness)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level NVH Engineer is responsible for leading NVH development and refinement activities for systems or vehicle platforms, including planning and executing test programs, analyzing data, and recommending design changes. The role involves both hands-on testing and collaboration with design, CAE, and validation teams to achieve target sound and vibration performance across powertrain, chassis, body, and interior systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct NVH testing for components, systems, and full vehicle builds (e.g., road noise, powertrain NVH, structure-borne and airborne noise).

  • Analyze NVH data using industry-standard tools and techniques (FFT, order tracking, TPA, modal analysis).

  • Identify noise and vibration sources and develop actionable recommendations for mitigation.

  • Collaborate with design and CAE teams to influence component geometry and material choices.

  • Work with suppliers and internal teams to ensure NVH targets are incorporated in product design.

  • Participate in vehicle subjective evaluations and correlate to objective measurements.

  • Contribute to NVH performance tracking throughout the development cycle and into production.

Key Focus Areas:

  • System-Level NVH Analysis and Troubleshooting
(Suspension, body, powertrain mounts, HVAC, etc.)

  • Source Path Contribution and Transfer Path Analysis (TPA)
(Identify and quantify contributions of different NVH sources)

  • Test Planning and Execution
(Design test procedures, execute tests in lab or on-road conditions)

  • Design Support and Optimization
(Recommend isolation strategies, damping materials, mount designs)

  • CAE Correlation and Development Support
(Work closely with simulation team to align models and tests)

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
(Manufacturing, validation, design, and quality engineering)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Acoustical, or Aerospace Engineering (Master’s preferred).

  • 3–7 years of experience in NVH testing or development.

  • Proficient in NVH analysis tools (e.g., LMS Test.Lab, Brüel & Kjær, DEWESoft).

  • Good understanding of structural dynamics, acoustics, and vibration mitigation techniques.

  • Working knowledge of CAE-based NVH simulation is a plus.

  • Strong technical communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with hybrid or electric vehicle NVH development.

  • Familiarity with NVH of lightweight or composite materials.

  • Subjective sound quality evaluation experience (Boom, Rattle, Whine).

  • Knowledge of NVH standards and regulatory guidelines.
