NDT Specialist – Weld and Fabrication Quality (VT, RT, UT, MT)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior NDT Specialist is responsible for leading and performing advanced nondestructive testing (NDT) operations—Visual Testing (VT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)—to ensure weld quality, structural integrity, and regulatory compliance in complex marine, offshore, and industrial fabrication projects. This role provides technical leadership in inspection planning, defect analysis, and quality documentation, while mentoring junior inspectors and coordinating closely with production and QA teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and conduct complex NDT inspections using VT, RT, UT, and MT on critical welds, joints, and structural components.

  • Evaluate and interpret test results to identify, characterize, and assess discontinuities or defects against project specifications and applicable codes.

  • Oversee inspection workflow and execution of ITPs (Inspection and Test Plans), ensuring adherence to quality requirements and schedule milestones.

  • Review and approve radiographic film/digital images, ultrasonic scans, and magnetic particle inspection reports.

  • Ensure compliance with ASME Section V, AWS D1.1, API 1104, ISO 9712, and relevant client or classification standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, BV, NAVSEA).

  • Supervise and train Level I and II NDT technicians, providing guidance on testing procedures, calibration, and reporting.

  • Collaborate with welding, engineering, and fabrication teams to resolve quality issues, develop inspection strategies, and close NCRs.

  • Support WPS, PQR, and WPQ testing by providing NDT validation and documentation.

  • Maintain up-to-date calibration records, inspection logs, and traceability documentation for QA/QC audits and client submissions.

  • Participate in quality audits, client inspections, and third-party verification activities.

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) of critical defects and support corrective/preventive action (CAPA) implementation.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Technology, Materials Science, or related technical discipline.

  • 7–12 years of experience in NDT and fabrication inspection, preferably in the marine, shipbuilding, offshore, or heavy industrial sectors.

  • ASNT or ISO 9712 Level II (minimum) in VT, RT, UT, and MT – Level III in at least one method is highly preferred.

  • In-depth understanding of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW), structural steel fabrication, and pressure-boundary quality requirements.

  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, weld maps, standards, and code references.

  • Familiarity with NDT data management systems, digital radiography tools, and inspection traceability software.

  • Strong leadership, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Level III certification in any method (ASNT, ISO 9712, or equivalent).

  • Experience with advanced NDT techniques (e.g., Phased Array UT, TOFD, Eddy Current Testing).

  • Prior work with classification societies (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register) and high-spec client programs (e.g., NAVSEA, Petrobras, Total, ADNOC).

  • Experience in failure analysis or forensic metallurgy related to weld quality.

Working Conditions:

  • Field-based role in shipyards, fabrication yards, offshore modules, or inspection zones.

  • Work may involve confined spaces, elevated areas, and extended hours during peak project periods.

  • Must wear appropriate PPE and comply with all radiation safety and site-specific HSE protocols.

  • Occasional travel required for site inspections, audits, and client meetings.
