Mechanical Testing Technician – Valves

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mechanical Testing Technician (Mid-Level) is responsible for independently executing a wide range of mechanical tests on valve components and assemblies. This includes strength, leak, endurance, flow, and functional performance testing, as well as documenting and reporting results for validation, compliance, or failure analysis purposes. The role requires strong technical knowledge of testing standards, instrumentation, and mechanical behavior of valve systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct mechanical tests on various valve types (e.g., control, relief, check, thermal, solenoid) following internal procedures and international standards (ISO, ASME, API).

  • Operate and maintain hydraulic/pneumatic test rigs, endurance test setups, flow benches, and burst/pressure test stations.

  • Perform leak testing using pressure decay, bubble, or helium leak methods.

  • Conduct and document dimensional inspections, hardness checks, torque/load measurement, and wear analysis.

  • Analyze test results and flag anomalies or early failures for further investigation.

  • Collaborate with design, R&D, or quality engineers to support root cause analysis, product validation, and design iterations.

  • Calibrate and maintain testing tools and ensure traceability of test data and equipment logs.

  • Train junior technicians on safe and accurate test practices.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Advanced Test Execution:

    • Perform independent test setup and execution for mechanical and functional performance of valves.

    • Test components under variable pressure, temperature, and cycle loads.

  2. Instrumentation & Data Monitoring:

    • Use data acquisition systems, pressure/flow sensors, torque transducers, and displacement measurement tools.

    • Monitor live parameters and log test data for trend analysis and reporting.

  3. Test Standards & Compliance:

    • Follow and interpret relevant standards (e.g., API 598, ISO 5208, ASME B16.34).

    • Ensure all tests are compliant with product validation protocols.

  4. Reporting & Analysis:

    • Prepare detailed test reports with measurement data, test conditions, failure observations, and photographic evidence.

    • Identify test deviations or component inconsistencies and support investigations.

  5. Lab Maintenance & Safety:

    • Conduct basic preventive maintenance of test rigs and calibrate equipment regularly.

    • Follow safety protocols when working with high-pressure, high-temperature, or rotating systems.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

  • 3–6 years of hands-on experience in mechanical testing of valves or similar mechanical components.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical testing equipment, fluid systems, and failure detection methods.

  • Familiarity with relevant test standards and compliance protocols.

  • Proficient in using mechanical measurement tools (micrometers, pressure gauges, DAQ systems).

  • Basic computer skills (MS Excel, report writing tools); experience with LabVIEW or similar platforms is a plus.

  • Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
