Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Maintenance Technician – Turbines is responsible for executing, supervising, and optimizing mechanical maintenance activities for steam, gas, or hydro turbines and auxiliary systems. This role demands deep technical expertise, leadership in turbine overhauls and diagnostics, and the ability to train junior staff. The technician ensures high reliability, performance, and safety of turbine systems while actively contributing to root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Turbine Maintenance Leadership:

    • Lead and perform advanced maintenance, overhauls, and repairs on turbine rotors, casings, diaphragms, bearings, seals, and couplings.

    • Supervise the installation, alignment, and commissioning of turbine components and associated mechanical systems.

  • Failure Analysis & Diagnostics:

    • Diagnose complex mechanical faults using precision tools (e.g., laser alignment systems, vibration analysis devices, thermal cameras).

    • Participate in and support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and implement corrective actions.

  • Shutdown & Turnaround Planning:

    • Plan and coordinate major turbine maintenance activities during plant shutdowns.

    • Ensure work is executed per schedule, quality standards, and safety protocols.

  • Technical Documentation & CMMS:

    • Review and update turbine maintenance procedures, work instructions, and BOMs.

    • Document completed work and condition assessments in CMMS for long-term tracking.

  • Collaboration & Coordination:

    • Liaise with operations, engineering, and OEM specialists to resolve technical issues.

    • Assist in audits, reliability assessments, and turbine performance evaluations.

  • Mentoring & Training:

    • Mentor junior technicians and apprentices, sharing knowledge of turbine design, maintenance best practices, and safety standards.

    • Conduct toolbox talks and contribute to technical training content.

  • Safety & Compliance:

    • Enforce strict adherence to site safety policies, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), permit-to-work systems, and confined space protocols.

    • Ensure all maintenance work meets OEM, industry, and regulatory standards.


Key Focus Areas:

  1. Turbine Overhaul Expertise:
    Lead complex maintenance, disassembly, and reassembly of turbine systems during outages.

  2. Advanced Diagnostics:
    Utilize high-level troubleshooting tools to assess and resolve mechanical issues affecting turbine performance.

  3. Reliability-Centered Maintenance:
    Contribute to reliability programs by identifying trends in wear, failure modes, and lubrication issues.

  4. Precision Fitment & Alignment:
    Ensure accurate installation of rotating components using best practices in metrology and alignment.

  5. Technical Documentation:
    Maintain detailed records of maintenance history, technical reports, and performance recommendations.

  6. Team Leadership & Knowledge Transfer:
    Guide and train junior staff while promoting a culture of safety, quality, and technical excellence.


Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field.

  • 7–12+ years of experience in mechanical maintenance of turbines (steam, gas, or hydro).

  • Strong technical expertise in turbine overhauls, alignments, seal and bearing replacement, and auxiliary systems.

  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms and mechanical diagnostic tools.

  • Experience in planning and executing major maintenance projects or shutdowns.

  • Certified training in turbine maintenance or OEM programs is a plus.

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and mentoring capabilities.
