The Mechanical Engineering Manager leads the mechanical engineering function for a power plant, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all mechanical systems (boilers, turbines, auxiliaries, HVAC, piping). This role combines technical oversight, project management, and team leadership to deliver engineering solutions, modifications, and continuous improvements.
Engineering Leadership & Strategy
Develop and execute the mechanical engineering roadmap aligned with plant performance and reliability goals.
Establish engineering standards, best practices, and governance for mechanical designs and modifications.
Project & Modification Management
Lead capital and O&M projects (e.g., turbomachinery upgrades, boiler retrofits, piping reroutes) from concept through commissioning.
Coordinate feasibility studies, detailed design, vendor selection, and construction support.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
Provide advanced technical guidance for root-cause analysis of equipment failures (turbine seals, pump bearings, valve leaks, etc.).
Oversee condition–monitoring data interpretation and recommend corrective actions.
Maintenance & Reliability Interface
Collaborate with Maintenance to develop preventive and predictive maintenance plans based on FMEA/RCM outputs.
Review failure trends and implement engineering fixes to reduce downtime and maintenance costs.
Team Management & Development
Supervise a team of mechanical engineers and draftsmen; set objectives, conduct performance reviews, and mentor career growth.
Identify training needs and foster competency development in areas like stress analysis, hydrodynamics, and thermal design.
Budgeting & Resource Planning
Prepare and manage the engineering budget, forecasting man-hours, tools, and external consultancy expenses.
Optimize resource allocation between routine support and special projects.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all engineering activities comply with industry codes and plant safety protocols (ASME, API, NFPA).
Review and approve mechanical design changes under Management of Change (MoC) procedures.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain up-to-date mechanical drawings, design data, and equipment manuals.
Report engineering performance metrics (project delivery, cost variance, MTBF improvements) to senior management.
Ensure the integrity of boilers, steam turbines, heat exchangers, pumps, and piping through robust design and modification practices.
Drive continuous improvement in plant heat rate, equipment availability, and lifecycle costs via engineering interventions.
Deliver engineering projects on time, within budget, and with minimal operational disruption.
Build a high-performing engineering team skilled in power-plant-specific technologies and methodologies.
Champion a safety-first culture in all engineering designs and field implementations, adhering to relevant codes and standards.
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (Power specialization preferred)
Experience: 10+ years in power-plant mechanical engineering, including 3–5 years in a supervisory or managerial role
Certifications: PE/Chartered Engineer (preferred), PMP, or relevant technical certifications
Deep knowledge of steam cycle equipment, hydrodynamics, and thermal systems
Strong project management and vendor-management skills
Proficient in engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, PDMS/E3D, FEA tools)
Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder-engagement abilities
Proven track record in improving plant reliability through engineering solutions
Primarily office–based with frequent site visits to turbine halls, boiler rooms, and mechanical workshops
May require after-hours support during outages or critical engineering issues
Adherence to PPE and plant safety protocols is mandatory
