Roles & Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineering Manager leads and manages the mechanical engineering team responsible for the design, development, analysis, and continuous improvement of mechanical systems, components, and products. The role ensures engineering excellence, adherence to timelines, compliance with standards, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams to support business objectives in manufacturing, product innovation, or industrial operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership:

    • Manage a team of mechanical engineers and drafters/designers.

    • Assign tasks, mentor team members, and foster a culture of innovation and technical excellence.

  2. Project Management:

    • Oversee end-to-end execution of mechanical engineering projects—from concept to production.

    • Ensure project timelines, budgets, and technical specifications are met.

  3. Design & Development:

    • Lead the mechanical design and validation of equipment, machines, or products using CAD/CAE tools.

    • Ensure designs meet safety, regulatory, performance, and cost requirements.

  4. Engineering Standards & Best Practices:

    • Establish and maintain design standards, documentation protocols, and engineering guidelines.

    • Ensure compliance with relevant codes (e.g., ASME, ANSI, ISO).

  5. Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support:

    • Work closely with manufacturing, R&D, quality, supply chain, and project management teams.

    • Provide engineering support during prototyping, production ramp-up, and field deployments.

  6. Continuous Improvement:

    • Drive design for manufacturability (DFM), design for reliability (DFR), and design to cost (DTC) initiatives.

    • Identify areas for product/process improvement and implement engineering changes (ECR/ECO).

  7. Vendor & Material Evaluation:

    • Participate in selection and evaluation of materials, components, and suppliers.

    • Review technical drawings and specifications with external partners or fabricators.

Required Skills & Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Strong grasp of mechanical systems, structural design, thermodynamics, and material science.

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, CATIA) and simulation software (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus).

  • Knowledge of GD&T, FMEA, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing methods.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Ability to lead technical teams and influence across departments.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective reporting and collaboration.

Problem Solving & Analysis:

  • Skilled in root cause analysis, data interpretation, and risk assessment.

  • Aptitude for making design trade-offs based on cost, quality, and performance.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education:

    • B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (required)

    • M.E./MS in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Engineering Management (preferred)

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • PMP, Six Sigma, P.E. License (if applicable), Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP)

  • Experience:

    • 10–15 years in mechanical engineering roles

    • 3–5 years in an engineering leadership/management position

    • Experience in industries such as machinery, automotive, HVAC, energy, aerospace, or manufacturing preferred
