Mechanical Engineer – Fabrication Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems for advanced fabrication platforms such as CNC machinery, robotic work cells, and custom tooling. You will lead the development of subsystems, optimize designs for manufacturability, and work collaboratively across engineering and production teams to ensure efficient mechanical execution in real-world fabrication environments.

Key Focus Areas:

1. Mechanical Design & Assembly Engineering

    • Develop robust, precise, and manufacturable designs using CAD software like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor.

    • Engineer assemblies and mechanical linkages considering structural loads, kinematics, and dynamic performance.

    • Apply DFM/DFA principles to ensure design readiness for machining, welding, sheet metal, and additive processes.

2. Fabrication Support & Production Integration

    • Collaborate with fabrication teams to translate designs into physical parts; address production feedback.

    • Conduct tolerance analysis, fit-up validation, and mechanical troubleshooting during prototyping and build phases.

3. Technical Documentation & BOM Management

    • Generate 2D fabrication drawings with GD&T, BOMs, assembly guides, and mechanical specifications.

    • Maintain documentation in PLM/PDM systems for traceability and version control.

4. Component Sourcing & Material Selection

    • Select mechanical components (bearings, actuators, fasteners, etc.) and structural materials based on performance and cost trade-offs.

    • Interface with vendors and procurement to specify and validate critical hardware.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Design Reviews

    • Interface with controls, automation, and systems engineers to ensure seamless mechanical-electrical integration.

    • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement in design and fabrication practices.

Core Responsibilities:

    • Own design and release of mechanical components and subassemblies for fabrication systems.

    • Provide hands-on support for prototyping, testing, and system installation.

    • Analyze structural performance, drive system selection, and kinematic motion paths as needed.

    • Lead root cause analysis and engineering change requests (ECRs) based on fabrication or field feedback.

    • Contribute to technical standards, templates, and best practices within the mechanical team.

Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.

    • 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design and fabrication system development.

    • Proficiency in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor) and 2D detailing with GD&T.

    • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (CNC machining, welding, sheet metal, 3D printing).

    • Hands-on experience with prototype assembly, testing, and mechanical troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Exposure to robotic systems, custom automation, or modular fixture design.

    • Familiarity with motion control, actuators, and machine kinematics.

    • Knowledge of FEA, motion analysis, or other simulation tools for validation.

    • Experience working in cross-functional teams delivering integrated electro-mechanical systems.
