Mechanical Assembly Technician – Marine Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Assembly Technician with mid-level experience to support the assembly and integration of marine systems and equipment. This role involves mechanical fitting, system testing, quality control, and providing technical support during installation and commissioning. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with mechanical assemblies in a marine or industrial environment and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Perform mechanical assembly of marine equipment such as propulsion units, hydraulic systems, engines, steering gear, cooling systems, and structural components.

    • Interpret and work from detailed engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and schematics.

    • Use precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches) to ensure accurate fitting and tolerances.

    • Conduct sub-assembly, full-system builds, and preliminary testing.

    • Diagnose and resolve assembly-related issues; suggest design or process improvements when applicable.

    • Assist with system installations, alignments, and onboard commissioning.

    • Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and production schedules.

    • Provide guidance to junior technicians and apprentices as needed.

    • Record and report assembly data, test results, and issues accurately in documentation systems.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Complex Mechanical Assembly: Independently execute complex builds of marine systems with minimal supervision.

  • System Testing & Diagnostics: Perform mechanical and functional testing of assemblies, identify faults, and support root cause analysis.

  • Marine Standards Compliance: Ensure all work complies with industry regulations and marine safety standards (ISO, ABS, DNV, etc.).

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify areas for efficiency or quality enhancements and participate in improvement initiatives.

  • Mentorship & Team Support: Support and mentor junior team members and contribute to a collaborative shop floor culture.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Technical Diploma / ITI / Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related field.

    • 3–5 years of hands-on mechanical assembly experience, preferably in marine or heavy industrial sectors.

    • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and hydraulic/pneumatic schematics.

    • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, torque specifications, and alignment procedures.

    • Experience with quality control processes and inspection tools.

    • Good communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with marine propulsion systems, powertrains, or shipboard machinery.

    • Certification or training in rigging, lifting, or mechanical safety practices.

    • Familiarity with ERP systems or digital work order platforms.
