Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Senior Materials Engineer with deep expertise in superalloys and ceramic coatings to lead advanced materials projects, drive innovation, and provide technical leadership in developing high-performance materials for demanding applications. This role involves strategic planning, mentoring, cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring the successful implementation of materials and coating solutions in aerospace, power generation, or other high-temperature industries.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Strategic Development & Innovation in Superalloys:
Lead the research, design, and optimization of nickel-based, cobalt-based, and other superalloys tailored for extreme environments, ensuring enhanced mechanical properties, oxidation, and corrosion resistance.

    • Advanced Ceramic Coatings Engineering:
Oversee development and qualification of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant ceramic coatings. Evaluate coating application techniques (thermal spray, PVD, CVD) and innovate to improve coating performance and lifespan.

    • Materials Testing, Qualification & Standards Compliance:
Define and guide comprehensive testing regimes (creep, fatigue, oxidation, corrosion) to qualify materials and coatings for critical applications. Ensure compliance with industry standards and certifications.

    • Failure Analysis & Continuous Improvement:
Lead complex failure investigations using advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, and mechanical testing. Develop and implement corrective actions and continuous improvement strategies to enhance product reliability.

    • Process Development, Scale-up & Technology Transfer:
Drive coating process development and optimization for manufacturing scale-up. Collaborate with production teams to ensure technology transfer is effective and manufacturing challenges are resolved.

    • Technical Leadership & Mentorship:
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers. Foster a culture of innovation, best practices, and continuous learning within the materials engineering team.

    • Cross-functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Management:
Work closely with R&D, design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to align materials solutions with business goals. Engage with external partners, suppliers, and customers to drive project success.

    • Technical Reporting & Intellectual Property:
Prepare detailed technical reports, patent applications, and publications. Present findings to internal leadership and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

    • Lead materials development projects from concept through qualification and implementation.

    • Manage complex materials characterization and testing programs.

    • Analyze and interpret data to guide decision-making and materials selection.

    • Coordinate failure investigations and root cause analyses.

    • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and research institutions.

    • Ensure laboratory and project compliance with safety and quality standards.

    • Drive innovation in materials and coating technologies aligned with strategic goals.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related discipline; PhD preferred.

    • 7+ years of hands-on experience with superalloys and ceramic coatings in aerospace, power generation, or similar industries.

    • Expertise in advanced materials characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, XRD, mechanical testing).

    • Strong background in coating technologies, deposition processes, and materials performance evaluation.

    • Proven leadership in failure analysis, process development, and cross-functional project management.

    • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead technical teams.

Preferred:

    • Experience with industry standards such as AMS, ASTM, or ISO.

    • Track record of published research or patents in relevant materials engineering fields.

    • Familiarity with computational materials science or modeling tools.

    • Strong project management skills and experience with budgeting and resource planning.
