The Materials Engineer leads materials selection, testing, analysis, and qualification efforts for aerospace metals and composite materials used in structural and mechanical components. This role drives materials-related engineering decisions, supports design and manufacturing teams, and ensures compliance with aerospace standards and certifications. The position requires hands-on testing expertise, deep materials knowledge, and cross-functional collaboration to solve complex materials challenges in aerospace programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead evaluation and characterization of aerospace metals (e.g., aluminum alloys, titanium, stainless steels) and composite materials (carbon fiber, prepregs, honeycomb)
Develop and execute test plans for mechanical, thermal, fatigue, corrosion, and environmental testing of materials and components
Analyze test data, interpret results, and produce detailed technical reports to support design validation and materials certification
Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers to optimize materials selection, processing, and performance
Support failure investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions related to materials issues
Manage material qualification programs including supplier audits, certification reviews, and traceability documentation
Provide technical expertise on material properties, process effects, and compatibility for new aerospace programs
Contribute to materials database management and continuous improvement of materials engineering processes
Mentor junior materials engineers and technicians

Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field (required)
Master’s degree preferred
Certifications:
Relevant materials testing certifications (ASTM, NACE, etc.)
Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Manufacturing certifications preferred
Experience:
3–7 years of experience in aerospace or related industries working with metals and composite materials
Proven experience leading materials testing, analysis, and qualification activities
Familiarity with aerospace quality standards such as AS9100, NADCAP, and customer-specific requirements
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of aerospace materials properties and processing techniques
Proficient in mechanical testing methods including tensile, fatigue, fracture toughness, and corrosion testing
Experience with composite materials testing and characterization methods
Skilled in data analysis tools (Excel, Minitab, MATLAB) and technical report writing
Knowledge of materials failure modes, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
Soft Skills:
