Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Marine Welder assists in the fabrication and assembly of marine vessels and components by performing high-pressure and structural welds in accordance with ABS, NAVSEA, or other maritime classification standards. Working under the supervision of certified welding personnel, the junior welder supports welding operations in structural modules, piping systems, and pressure-boundary components in a shipyard or offshore construction environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic welding tasks using SMAW (Stick), FCAW, GTAW (TIG), and GMAW (MIG) techniques on carbon steel, stainless steel, and marine-grade alloys.

  • Assist in executing structural and pressure-retaining welds as per approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) and under supervision of certified welders.

  • Prepare welding joints through grinding, beveling, and cleaning of base materials in accordance with marine welding standards.

  • Interpret simple fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and isometric sketches with guidance.

  • Follow instructions from senior welders and supervisors regarding sequence, technique, and quality requirements.

  • Comply with NAVSEA, ABS, or USCG welding standards depending on the contract or project scope.

  • Maintain welding tools, consumables, and equipment in safe and working condition.

  • Participate in welder training and qualification programs, including test coupons, mock-ups, and visual/NDT evaluations.

  • Follow all safety guidelines, including hot work permits, confined space protocols, and use of PPE in welding zones.

  • Report non-conformances, equipment faults, or safety hazards to supervisors immediately.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or technical training certificate in welding or metal fabrication.

  • 0–2 years of welding experience, preferably in a shipyard, naval project, or marine structure environment.

  • Basic knowledge of SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW processes.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in an industrial setting.

  • Familiar with basic marine materials and joint preparation techniques.

  • Physically fit for lifting, bending, standing for long periods, and working in confined or elevated spaces.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of ABS or NAVSEA welding qualification tests (or in progress).

  • Prior internship or apprenticeship in a shipyard or heavy fabrication facility.

  • Basic understanding of NDT inspection readiness (visual weld acceptance criteria).

  • Knowledge of welding safety and hot work permit systems.

Working Conditions:

  • On-site work in shipyards, drydocks, fabrication shops, or onboard vessels.

  • Exposure to welding fumes, noise, elevated temperatures, and confined spaces.

  • PPE including helmet, gloves, respirator, and protective clothing is mandatory.

  • May involve shift work, overtime, or weekend hours depending on project deadlines.
