Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Marine Valve Technician is responsible for performing the installation, overhaul, troubleshooting, and repair of various marine valves used in shipboard systems. This role involves both workshop and onboard assignments, requiring hands-on experience and a strong understanding of marine mechanical systems, safety protocols, and valve operation standards.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Install, align, and commission valves (manual, motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic) on marine piping systems.

    • Disassemble, inspect, refurbish, and reassemble valves including gate, globe, ball, butterfly, pressure relief, and non-return valves.

    • Conduct hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing of valves post-overhaul.

    • Identify wear, corrosion, and mechanical damage and take corrective actions such as lapping, seal/gasket replacement, and actuator adjustment.

    • Read and interpret technical drawings, valve datasheets, and P&ID diagrams.

    • Document service activities, test results, and maintain inspection records.

    • Adhere to classification society requirements (e.g., ABS, DNV, USCG) during inspection and testing procedures.

    • Collaborate with marine engineers, ship crew, and superintendents during onboard repair assignments.

    • Guide and support junior technicians in workshop and field environments.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Valve Types & Systems: In-depth understanding of different valve mechanisms (e.g., isolation, check, control) used in ballast, bilge, fuel oil, sea water cooling, and fire main systems.

    • Installation & Alignment: Proper mechanical alignment techniques and sealing practices during installation of flanged and threaded valves.

    • Overhaul Practices: Proficiency in disassembly, inspection, part replacement, cleaning, and reassembly following OEM procedures.

    • Testing & Quality Control: Competency in leak testing (hydro/pneumatic), inspection documentation, and verification against class standards.

    • Actuation Systems: Familiarity with valve actuators (manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric) and basic troubleshooting of control mechanisms.

    • Compliance & Safety: Working knowledge of maritime standards (IMO, SOLAS, class rules) and onboard safety procedures during hot work and confined space tasks.

Qualifications:

    • Diploma or Technical Certification in Marine, Mechanical, or Industrial Maintenance Engineering.

    • 3–5 years of relevant experience in marine or shipyard valve servicing roles.

    • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and valve operation principles.

    • Ability to work independently on repair jobs and collaborate with engineering teams.

    • Experience working onboard vessels or in shipyard/drydock environments preferred.

    • Familiarity with marine tools and equipment including torque wrenches, grinders, lapping tools, and pressure testing rigs.
