Marine Gas Turbine Technician – Operation and Field Support

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Marine Gas Turbine Technician supports the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of marine gas turbine propulsion and power generation systems onboard naval or commercial vessels. This role includes assisting in commissioning activities, performing field diagnostics, and ensuring system reliability during operational support assignments. The technician works independently or in teams under the guidance of senior engineers or OEM support leads.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot marine gas turbine systems and auxiliary equipment (fuel, lube oil, air intake, exhaust).

    • Perform routine and corrective maintenance on turbines, gearboxes, and control systems.

    • Support on-site commissioning, sea trials, and post-installation testing activities.

    • Conduct inspections and performance evaluations during planned maintenance or emergent field repairs.

    • Utilize diagnostic tools and software to assess turbine conditions and identify faults.

    • Follow OEM technical manuals and standard procedures for system operation and maintenance.

    • Assist in disassembly, replacement, and reassembly of major turbine components under supervision.

    • Interface with ship crew, OEM representatives, and field engineers during support operations.

    • Document maintenance actions, test results, and operational data in compliance with QA/QC requirements.

    • Adhere to safety, environmental, and maritime operational standards during field assignments.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

    • Diploma or Technical Certificate in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent field.

    • 3–6 years of experience working on marine gas turbine systems (e.g., LM2500, MT30, or similar).

    • Familiarity with turbine control systems, instrumentation, and operational interfaces.

    • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical manuals, system schematics, and P&IDs.

    • Hands-on experience with alignment, borescope inspection, vibration monitoring, or LRU replacement.

    • Ability to work onboard vessels and in field locations, including offshore or foreign ports.

    • Good understanding of maritime operational safety procedures.

    • Strong communication, reporting, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • OEM training/certification (GE, Rolls-Royce, or Siemens) on specific gas turbine models.

    • Basic understanding of Navy or Classification Society (ABS, DNV) standards.

    • Experience in supporting ship trials, drydock overhauls, or operational readiness inspections.

Working Conditions:

    • Rotational or project-based fieldwork, often in offshore, dockyard, or shipboard environments.

    • Physical demands include lifting, climbing, confined space work, and extended travel.

    • PPE and adherence to safety regulations are mandatory.
