Marine Gas Turbine Engineer – Design, Integration, and Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Marine Gas Turbine Engineer is responsible for leading the mechanical design, integration, and performance testing of gas turbine propulsion and auxiliary power systems aboard marine vessels. This role provides technical leadership from concept through commissioning, ensuring the turbine system meets marine engineering standards, class compliance, and operational reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the mechanical design and integration of gas turbine propulsion and power generation systems across naval and commercial marine platforms.

    • Oversee the development of 3D layouts, system schematics, and interface control documents (ICDs) for turbine modules and their auxiliary systems.

    • Direct alignment planning, structural interfacing, and vibration isolation of turbines with gearboxes, shaftlines, and ship hull structures.

    • Supervise the integration of air intake/exhaust systems, lube oil circuits, cooling water, fire suppression, and fuel handling subsystems.

    • Drive thermal performance simulations, airflow calculations, and mechanical design reviews to ensure system efficiency and maintainability.

    • Lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), dock trials, and sea trials—including data validation, vibration testing, transient behavior, and tuning.

    • Interface with control system teams to verify safe startup sequences, trip logic, condition monitoring, and interface boundaries.

    • Engage with classification societies (ABS, DNV, USCG, NAVSEA) for compliance assurance and certification documentation.

    • Perform root cause analysis of test failures, system misalignments, or post-delivery performance issues and implement corrective design actions.

    • Provide mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers and lead technical collaboration with shipyards, OEMs, and government/military stakeholders.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Gas Turbine Propulsion System Design and Integration within Marine Hulls

    • Mechanical Interfaces with Gearboxes, Shaftlines, and Structural Foundations

    • Auxiliary Systems Integration (Fuel, Lube Oil, Cooling, Air Intake/Exhaust)

    • Leadership in FAT, Dock, and Sea Trial Execution and Vibration Analysis

    • Compliance with Naval and Commercial Marine Standards (ABS, DNV, MIL-STD)

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a closely related field.

    • 8–15+ years of engineering experience, with a focus on gas turbine propulsion or auxiliary power systems in the marine or naval domain.

    • In-depth knowledge of marine gas turbine platforms such as GE LM2500, Rolls-Royce MT30, or equivalent aeroderivative units.

    • Strong background in turbine mounting, alignment, vibration mitigation, and thermal system modeling.

    • Experienced in coordinating across design, controls, installation, and commissioning teams.

Preferred Skills:

    • Prior experience leading integration efforts for naval vessels, frigates, destroyers, or offshore support vessels (OSVs).

    • Familiarity with dynamic simulations, noise/acoustic modeling, and structural vibration testing.

    • Proficiency with CAD and simulation tools (NX, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or STAR-CCM+).

    • Understanding of gas turbine control philosophies and interface management with automation systems.

    • Strong stakeholder communication skills, including engagement with shipyards, defense contractors, and classification society representatives.

Work Environment:

    • Combination of engineering office, design review meetings, and on-site presence at shipyards, OEM test facilities, or sea trial locations.

    • Occasional travel for commissioning, integration oversight, and customer coordination.

    • Required use of PPE and adherence to marine safety protocols during fieldwork, onboard activities, and test phases.
