The Senior Marine Boiler Inspector leads advanced inspection, testing, and compliance assurance of marine boilers and associated steam systems on commercial and naval vessels. This role involves planning and executing Class society surveys, supervising junior NDT personnel, and ensuring compliance with ASME, IACS, flag state, and IMO regulations. The inspector is the primary technical authority during boiler inspections and repairs, often coordinating with ship superintendents, marine surveyors, and QA managers during dry-dock and voyage repairs.
Plan and lead internal and external inspections of marine boilers, economizers, superheaters, drums, tubes, and steam piping during dry-dock or operational cycles.
Perform or supervise NDT/NDE techniques (UT, MT, PT, VT, RT if applicable) to identify cracks, thinning, corrosion, or weld defects.
Prepare vessels for Class society inspections (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, BV) and serve as the point of contact for surveyors and auditors.
Lead hydrostatic pressure tests, safety valve pop tests, and inspection of boiler safety systems per Class and OEM guidelines.
Review and approve repair plans, welding procedures (WPS/PQR), and conduct post-repair inspections to verify compliance.
Maintain detailed inspection records, condition reports, and failure trend analyses for audit purposes.
Support root cause analysis (RCA) of boiler failures and work with reliability or design engineers to develop preventive actions.
Advise ship managers and yard superintendents on boiler life extension, risk assessment, and repair prioritization.
Mentor junior and mid-level inspectors and ensure adherence to quality, safety, and procedural standards.
Ensure full compliance with IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, and other international regulatory frameworks governing pressure systems.
Strategic boiler inspection leadership and Class certification preparation
Advanced NDT techniques and complex failure identification
Oversight of boiler repair and quality control audits
Regulatory compliance, safety assurance, and mentoring
Education:
Degree or diploma in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
Certified NDT Level II or III in relevant methods (ASNT, ISO 9712, or EN 473)
Additional qualifications in ASME Boiler Code (Section I or VIII), NBIC, or equivalent are strongly preferred
Experience:
7+ years of experience in marine or industrial boiler inspection, with leadership in Class society compliance or dry-docking inspections
Demonstrated expertise in pressure vessel condition assessment, failure analysis, and steam safety systems
Technical Skills:
High-level knowledge of NDT/NDE technologies, condition-based monitoring, and pressure system risk evaluation
Skilled in interpreting ASME, IACS, and Class society rules for pressure vessel compliance and acceptance
Familiarity with boiler control logic, safety interlocks, water chemistry, and high-pressure piping systems
Proficient in technical reporting, audit documentation, and stakeholder communication
Soft Skills:
Strong leadership and communication, capable of managing cross-functional inspection teams
Decision-making in high-pressure and time-critical environments
Commitment to safety, quality assurance, and regulatory precision
Excellent mentoring ability and technical training delivery
