Job Title: Marine Boiler Inspector – NDE/NDT Testing and Safety Inspections

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Marine Boiler Inspector performs and oversees non-destructive testing (NDT/NDE), visual inspections, and safety evaluations of marine boilers and related steam systems to ensure compliance with Class society regulations, flag state requirements, and marine safety codes. This role includes hands-on inspections, field documentation, and interaction with ship engineers and repair teams during vessel operations and dry-docking. The inspector ensures that boiler integrity, weld quality, and safety systems meet operational and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently perform VT, UT, MT, PT, and thickness measurements on marine boiler drums, tubes, headers, and pressure-retaining welds.

  • Identify and document corrosion, stress cracking, erosion, pitting, misalignments, or weld defects in boiler components.

  • Lead or participate in hydrostatic test preparations, safety valve testing, and boiler room readiness for Class inspections.

  • Review and interpret blueprints, weld procedures, NDT codes, and equipment repair histories.

  • Coordinate with ship engineers, repair technicians, and Class surveyors during internal boiler inspections and repair verification.

  • Ensure that safety devices, flame arrestors, blowdown systems, and relief valves are functioning within compliance.

  • Write inspection reports with photographic evidence, defect locations, and repair recommendations.

  • Support or supervise NDT Level I technicians and guide their inspection practices.

  • Monitor inspection schedules and help maintain the vessel’s compliance log for ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, or BV.

  • Ensure strict compliance with safety procedures, including confined space entry, hot work regulations, and steam system hazard protocols.

Key Focus Areas:

  • NDT/NDE inspections of pressure vessels, tubes, and marine boiler systems

  • Compliance with marine Class society rules and IMO/flag state safety regulations

  • Boiler damage assessment and documentation for repair and certification

  • Supervision of junior inspectors or coordination with QA teams

Qualifications & Skills:

Education:

  • Technical diploma or associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or NDT Technology

  • Certified NDT Level II in at least two methods (e.g., UT and MT or PT and VT) as per ASNT, ISO 9712, or EN 473

Experience:

  • 3–6 years of experience performing NDT on marine, industrial, or pressure systems

  • Marine boiler inspection or steam system experience is required (preferably in shipyards, offshore vessels, or naval environments)

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in operating ultrasonic thickness meters, borescopes, weld gauges, and surface prep tools

  • Ability to interpret inspection codes (e.g., ASME Section I, VIII, NBIC, or IACS guidelines)

  • Competent in preparing defect maps, evaluating inspection trends, and identifying degradation patterns

  • Experience in boiler hydrotesting, internal surveys, or safety valve checks a strong asset

Soft Skills:

  • High attention to detail with strong decision-making in the field

  • Capable of working independently and managing inspection work scopes

  • Effective communicator with clear reporting and team coordination

  • Safety-driven, especially in confined and hazardous marine environments
