The Junior Marine Boiler Inspector assists in conducting non-destructive examination (NDE/NDT), safety checks, and regulatory inspections of marine boiler systems under the supervision of senior inspectors or certified engineers. This entry-level position supports inspection routines aboard ships, during dry-docking, or in marine repair yards to ensure compliance with Class society standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s) and international safety regulations. The role involves hands-on work around pressure vessels, steam drums, tubes, and associated components.
Assist in performing visual inspections (VT), ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and dye penetrant testing (PT) on marine boilers and steam systems.
Support senior inspectors in identifying signs of corrosion, pitting, erosion, fatigue, cracking, and improper welds.
Prepare boiler surfaces and access points for inspection by removing insulation, scale, and soot deposits under safety supervision.
Record and document findings in compliance with Class and flag state reporting requirements.
Learn to review drawings, repair history, and service records of marine pressure vessels.
Participate in safety valve checks, hydrostatic test preparation, and dry-dock boiler surveys.
Assist in tagging, documenting, and tracking defects or out-of-spec components.
Observe and follow all confined space entry protocols, hot work permits, and boiler safety procedures.
Work alongside NDT technicians, weld inspectors, and marine surveyors as part of the QA/QC team.
Stay current with training in NDT methods, inspection tools, and safety requirements.
