Manager – Valvetrain Design and Analysis

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Manager – Valvetrain Design and Analysis is responsible for leading the development, optimization, and validation of valvetrain systems for internal combustion engines across passenger, commercial, and high-performance applications. This includes camshafts, rocker arms, tappets, lifters, valve guides, seats, springs, VVT mechanisms, and actuation systems.

This role combines leadership in mechanical design, system dynamics, durability analysis, and advanced simulation techniques to ensure high-performance, durable, and compliant valvetrain subsystems. The manager will work cross-functionally with cylinder head design, CAE, manufacturing, and calibration teams to deliver robust and innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Valvetrain System Design Leadership

  • Lead the end-to-end design and packaging of valvetrain systems within the cylinder head and upper engine assembly.

  • Develop component specifications, materials selection, tolerances, and lubrication strategies for mechanical integrity and performance.

  • Own DFMEAs, GD&T, and design validation planning in coordination with testing and manufacturing.

2. Dynamic Simulation and Analysis

  • Oversee detailed dynamic simulation and multi-body modeling of valvetrain mechanisms to analyze valve motion, spring dynamics, contact forces, and NVH behavior.

  • Ensure system integrity at high engine speeds and temperature variations while minimizing wear and friction losses.

  • Validate analytical models using bench test data and correlation from engine testbeds.

3. Integration with Engine Systems

  • Coordinate with cylinder head and combustion system design teams to ensure optimal airflow, combustion, and emissions performance.

  • Ensure compatibility with VVT/VVL mechanisms, hydraulic lash adjusters, and electro-mechanical actuators.

  • Collaborate with controls and calibration teams on cam phasing and valve timing strategies.

4. Testing & Validation

  • Support engine testing for durability, thermal cycling, oil flow analysis, and wear behavior.

  • Oversee validation of valvetrain components including camshaft endurance, fatigue, and dynamic load testing.

  • Analyze failure modes (e.g., scuffing, fatigue cracking, galling) and drive root cause corrective actions.

5. Supplier and Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Manage technical interface with suppliers for design feasibility, DVP&R execution, and process control.

  • Drive value engineering and cost reduction initiatives while maintaining performance and reliability.

  • Support sourcing, prototype build, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) reviews.

6. Team and Project Leadership

  • Lead a team of design engineers and analysts focused on valvetrain subsystems.

  • Allocate resources across new product programs and design change initiatives.

  • Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in component design and system analysis.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Valvetrain Design (Fixed and Variable)

  • Multi-Body Dynamics, Contact Mechanics, and Vibration Analysis

  • Durability and Wear Optimization

  • Engine Performance and Emissions Compliance

  • Cross-Functional Engine Integration

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or similar field.

  • 8–12+ years of experience in engine valvetrain design, dynamics, and development.

  • Strong background in engine mechanical systems and system-level integration.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in CAD (CATIA, NX), dynamic simulation tools (e.g., GT-VTD, AVL EXCITE, Ricardo VALDYN).

  • Familiarity with material selection for high-wear and high-temperature applications.

  • Understanding of tribology, fatigue analysis, and oil system interactions.

  • Strong leadership, project management, and cross-functional communication skills.
