Maintenance Technician – Shipboard Valve Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Maintenance Technician to lead the inspection, maintenance, and repair of shipboard valve systems. This role is critical in ensuring fluid control systems operate safely and efficiently across a variety of marine platforms. The ideal candidate will have extensive technical knowledge of valve types, actuators, and associated piping systems, along with strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to mentor junior team members.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Advanced Valve Maintenance & Overhaul: Lead comprehensive servicing of valves, including disassembly, condition assessment, part replacement, and reassembly for a wide range of valve types.

  • Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Identify and resolve complex issues in valve systems affecting shipboard fluid processes (e.g., cooling, ballast, bilge, fuel, and firefighting).

  • System Integration & Alignment: Ensure valve components are properly aligned and integrated within broader mechanical and piping systems during maintenance and retrofits.

  • Testing & Validation: Perform functional and pressure testing (hydrostatic, pneumatic) to verify proper valve operation and leak integrity post-maintenance.

  • Compliance & Reporting: Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in accordance with maritime regulatory standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, USCG, IMO) and properly documented.

  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance to junior and mid-level technicians, delegate tasks effectively, and ensure work quality and safety compliance across the maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and perform inspection, maintenance, and repair of shipboard valves and associated actuators and fittings.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, valve schematics, and P&IDs to plan maintenance and troubleshoot faults.

  • Conduct failure analysis and propose modifications or improvements to reduce downtime or enhance performance.

  • Ensure timely completion of preventive and corrective maintenance tasks using CMMS or maintenance tracking systems.

  • Interface with engineering teams during drydock, refit, or system upgrade projects.

  • Train and supervise junior personnel, ensuring they follow safety standards and work instructions.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, parts usage reports, and test documentation for audit and compliance.

  • Participate in vessel inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews as a subject matter expert.

Qualifications:

  • Technical diploma, trade certification, or equivalent experience in Mechanical or Marine Engineering.

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with mechanical and valve systems maintenance, preferably in marine, offshore, or industrial environments.

  • In-depth understanding of valve types (ball, gate, globe, check, butterfly, relief), actuators (manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric), and marine piping systems.

  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, technical manuals, and safety procedures.

  • Familiarity with marine safety standards, confined space protocols, and lockout/tagout procedures.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills.

  • Comfortable working in shipboard environments, including confined spaces, engine rooms, and elevated areas.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience on commercial ships, naval vessels, or offshore platforms.

  • Knowledge of classification society standards (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register).

  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms for maintenance scheduling and reporting.

  • Experience in project oversight, crew coordination, or maintenance planning.

  • Certifications in valve testing, flange management, or actuator calibration are a plus.
