Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Maintenance Manager – Steam and Boiler Systems is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all maintenance activities related to steam-generating systems across a marine fleet or shipyard facility. This role ensures operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and optimal performance of high-pressure propulsion boilers, low-pressure auxiliary boilers, and associated steam systems. The manager leads a team of technicians and engineers to execute both preventive and corrective maintenance across vessels or infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage maintenance operations for steam boilers, burners, feedwater systems, steam piping, pressure relief systems, and auxiliary heating systems.

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs based on manufacturer guidelines, class rules, and operational best practices.

  • Supervise a team of technicians, mechanics, and contractors performing repairs, inspections, and overhauls on steam and boiler systems.

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations, maritime standards (SOLAS, MARPOL), and class society requirements (ABS, DNV, etc.).

  • Monitor system health using condition monitoring, inspection reports, and performance data; initiate corrective actions when necessary.

  • Oversee spare parts management, procurement planning, and vendor coordination for boiler-related components.

  • Manage maintenance schedules to minimize downtime during vessel operations or yard service windows.

  • Support emergency troubleshooting and repair during system failures or unplanned outages.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, compliance certificates, and work orders in the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).

  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, and QA/QC departments to align maintenance plans with vessel or yard schedules.

Key Focus Areas:

  • System Reliability: Ensure continuous availability of steam and heating systems across the fleet or facility.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to boiler inspection schedules and ensure systems meet regulatory and classification requirements.

  • Team Leadership: Supervise and develop maintenance personnel; ensure safe work practices and technical competency.

  • Asset Lifecycle Management: Optimize maintenance costs and extend boiler and steam system service life.

  • Downtime Reduction: Plan and execute proactive maintenance to reduce unplanned outages or delays.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Technology (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 8–15 years of experience maintaining marine or industrial steam and boiler systems, including supervisory roles.

  • Strong understanding of high- and low-pressure steam systems, boiler water treatment, safety valves, combustion systems, and control instrumentation.

  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and maritime regulations such as SOLAS and MARPOL.

  • Experience with shipboard or industrial maintenance software (CMMS platforms).

  • Proven ability to manage multi-skilled maintenance teams and prioritize technical issues.

Preferred Credentials / Experience:

  • Marine Engineering License (2nd or Chief Engineer) or Stationary Engineer/Boiler Operator certification.

  • Experience working in shipyards, offshore platforms, or with commercial/naval fleets.

  • Knowledge of advanced boiler control systems, fuel conversion (e.g., LNG), or waste heat recovery units (WHRUs).

  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) certification is a plus.
