Machinist / Machining Technician – Marine Parts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Machinist / Machining Technician – Marine Parts is responsible for independently performing precision machining operations on marine engine components, propulsion system parts, and mechanical assemblies. The role requires experience with both manual and CNC machine tools, the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, and a commitment to safety and dimensional accuracy.

This technician plays a key role in ensuring high-quality marine components are produced or repaired to exact specifications in support of shipbuilding, maintenance, and retrofit projects.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Set up and operate manual and CNC machines (e.g., lathe, milling, boring, surface grinding) for precision machining of marine components.

    • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and process sheets to execute machining tasks.

    • Perform accurate measurements using precision instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, etc.) to validate dimensional tolerances.

    • Select proper tooling, speeds, feeds, and fixtures for different marine-grade materials (e.g., stainless steel, bronze, Inconel).

    • Execute surface finishing, keyway cutting, facing, threading, or custom modifications for parts such as shafts, couplings, propellers, and engine blocks.

    • Maintain dimensional accuracy and ensure adherence to quality, safety, and operational standards.

    • Support minor troubleshooting of machine tools and assist in routine preventive maintenance.

    • Collaborate with quality inspectors and engineers on in-process checks and first article inspections.

    • Assist in training junior machinists and participate in process improvement initiatives.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Precision Machining of Marine Parts

    • Independently handle machining of propeller shafts, engine components, and structural parts to tight tolerances.

  2. Engineering Drawing Interpretation

    • Work from complex blueprints, marine classifications, and tolerance specifications.

  3. Tooling & Machining Parameters

    • Select and optimize tools, speeds, and feeds for different materials and operations.

  4. Quality & Dimensional Control

    • Ensure parts meet dimensional specs and surface finish requirements with minimal rework.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • ITI, Diploma, or Associate Degree in Machining, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

    • 3–6 years of machining experience in marine, heavy equipment, or industrial sectors.

    • Proficient in manual machining; basic to intermediate CNC programming or operation knowledge preferred.

    • Strong understanding of mechanical tolerances, fits, and geometric dimensioning.

    • Familiarity with material properties relevant to marine environments (e.g., corrosion-resistant alloys).

    • Skilled in using measurement tools and inspection gauges.

    • Strong problem-solving skills, precision orientation, and adherence to safety protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with machining for ship components (e.g., rudder stocks, engine liners, bearing housings).

    • Familiarity with DNV, ABS, or other marine classification standards.

    • Exposure to CAM software, CNC offset adjustments, or machine code edits is a plus.

    • Training in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
