Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Machinist / Machining Technician – Marine Parts is responsible for supporting the precision machining of components used in marine engines, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment. Working under the supervision of senior machinists, the technician operates manual and basic CNC machines to perform turning, milling, drilling, and surface finishing tasks while adhering to safety and quality standards.

This role is ideal for technical graduates or trade apprentices seeking hands-on experience in machining within a high-precision, heavy-industry environment.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in operating manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to machine marine components to required tolerances.

    • Follow engineering drawings, process sheets, and verbal instructions to complete machining operations.

    • Support setup of workpieces, tooling, and fixtures for machining operations under supervision.

    • Measure and inspect machined parts using calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions.

    • Deburr and finish parts as needed to ensure surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

    • Follow safety guidelines for handling tools, materials, and rotating equipment in the machine shop.

    • Perform routine machine maintenance, such as lubrication, cleaning, and reporting wear or issues.

    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area and comply with shop housekeeping standards.

    • Record work performed and support documentation of machining logs or quality checklists.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Basic Machining Skills

    • Learning and assisting with turning, milling, drilling, and grinding of marine mechanical components.

  2. Interpretation of Drawings

    • Understanding technical drawings and applying basic dimensions and tolerances to workpieces.

  3. Measurement & Inspection

    • Using basic inspection tools to verify part dimensions and ensure quality output.

  4. Workshop Safety & Cleanliness

    • Practicing proper safety and housekeeping procedures in a machining environment.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • ITI / Trade certification in Machining, Mechanical Fitter, or equivalent technical field.

    • 0–2 years of hands-on experience in machining (internships/apprenticeships considered).

    • Basic knowledge of machining tools and workshop safety practices.

    • Familiarity with reading simple mechanical drawings and symbols.

    • Willingness to learn and improve machining skills under guidance.

    • Good hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and mechanical aptitude.

    • Physically fit and able to work with heavy parts and machinery in a workshop setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Exposure to marine component manufacturing or repair environments is a plus.

    • Experience using basic CNC machines or digital readout systems (DRO) is an advantage.

    • Eagerness to develop skills in marine propulsion or engine part machining.
