Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for leading end-to-end machining operations, ensuring the smooth execution of production plans, maintaining quality standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This role manages multiple shifts, optimizes resources, oversees safety compliance, and mentors junior staff in machining best practices and leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Shop Floor Leadership:

    • Oversee day-to-day CNC and conventional machining operations across shifts.

    • Ensure optimal machine utilization, minimize downtime, and maximize throughput.

  2. Team & Shift Management:

    • Supervise and mentor machinists, tool setters, and junior supervisors.

    • Conduct shift meetings, manpower planning, and skill matrix development.

  3. Production Planning & Execution:

    • Review and align production schedules with planning and dispatch teams.

    • Ensure adherence to cycle times, target output, and production KPIs.

  4. Quality Assurance:

    • Monitor in-process quality and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

    • Coordinate with QC teams on inspections, NCR resolution, and audits.

  5. Tooling, Maintenance & Machine Readiness:

    • Ensure availability and optimization of cutting tools and fixtures.

    • Oversee preventive maintenance and breakdown response for machining equipment.

  6. Process Improvement:

    • Lead Kaizen, 5S, and lean initiatives to reduce waste and improve efficiency.

    • Identify bottlenecks and drive projects to improve process stability and cycle time.

  7. Safety & Compliance:

    • Enforce safety protocols, machine guarding, and compliance with EHS standards.

    • Conduct risk assessments and root cause analysis of any incidents.

  8. Reporting & Documentation:

    • Generate production, downtime, and quality reports for management review.

    • Ensure traceability and documentation compliance for audits and certifications.

Required Skills & Competencies:

Technical Expertise:

  • Deep knowledge of CNC machines (turning, milling, multi-axis), tooling, and cutting strategies.

  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and machining tolerances.

Leadership & Strategy:

  • Proven team management skills across multiple shifts or large teams.

  • Strong decision-making under pressure and ability to implement best practices.

Analytical & Process-Driven:

  • Proficient in using production metrics (OEE, productivity, rejection rates).

  • Experience in lean tools like root cause analysis, 5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, and SMED.

Digital & Documentation:

  • Familiarity with ERP/MES systems and digital job tracking.

  • Strong documentation and reporting ability for audits and compliance.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education:

    • Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, or Industrial Engineering

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • Lean Six Sigma, TPM, CNC Tooling, ISO/AS9100/TS16949 familiarity

  • Experience:

    • 8–15+ years in a machine shop/manufacturing environment

    • 5+ years in a supervisory or lead role, handling large teams and advanced operations
