MRO Technician – Mechanical Repairs and Overhaul

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior MRO Technician – Mechanical Repairs and Overhaul leads and executes complex mechanical repair and overhaul operations on critical equipment such as engines, turbines, pumps, gearboxes, compressors, and marine propulsion components. The role demands expert-level technical proficiency, the ability to mentor junior staff, and strict adherence to engineering and quality standards.

This technician works independently on high-precision maintenance projects, supports diagnostics and root cause analyses, and ensures that all repair work complies with safety, reliability, and performance expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead disassembly, inspection, repair, reassembly, and testing of complex mechanical systems and rotating equipment.

    • Interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and overhaul specifications to execute repairs to OEM or regulatory standards.

    • Perform precise measurements, alignments, and tolerance checks using instruments like micrometers, CMMs, and laser alignment tools.

    • Identify causes of mechanical failure and contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) and reliability improvements.

    • Conduct dynamic balancing, lapping, surface treatment, and machining prep where needed.

    • Oversee documentation including inspection reports, maintenance logs, parts usage records, and quality control forms.

    • Interface with QA/QC, engineering, planning, and supply chain teams to coordinate maintenance activities.

    • Ensure compliance with workplace safety, ISO/AS standards, and environmental protocols.

    • Train, mentor, and supervise junior and mid-level technicians on best practices and technical procedures.

    • Participate in audits, continuous improvement initiatives, and workshop optimization efforts.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Expert Mechanical Overhaul Execution

    • Independently carry out and oversee complex overhauls of high-value mechanical systems.

  2. Inspection & Quality Assurance Leadership

    • Lead precision inspections and ensure repair compliance with standards and tolerances.

  3. Mentorship & Team Development

    • Guide and train less experienced technicians, fostering skills growth and safety culture.

  4. Technical Problem Solving & RCA

    • Identify issues in degraded or failed systems and contribute to corrective solutions.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • ITI certification, Diploma, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Maintenance Technology.

    • 7+ years of progressive experience in MRO operations, particularly with large or mission-critical mechanical equipment.

    • Advanced understanding of rotating machinery, sealing systems, tolerances, and material properties.

    • Skilled in reading technical drawings, blueprints, and OEM specifications.

    • Proficient in the use of inspection tools, lifting/rigging equipment, and shop machinery.

    • Experienced with digital maintenance systems (e.g., CMMS, SAP PM) and repair documentation standards.

    • Strong leadership, communication, and troubleshooting abilities.

    • Committed to workplace safety, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • OEM-certified repair training (e.g., Rolls-Royce, MAN, GE, Siemens).

    • Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or API/ABS/DNV repair standards.

    • Experience in regulated sectors such as aerospace, defense, or marine classification societies.

    • Knowledge of vibration analysis, thermography, or NDT methods is a plus.
