Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: Leak Detection Technician – Valve Systems (Water Treatment)

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Mid-Level Leak Detection Technician to perform field-based leak detection, condition assessment, and diagnostics on valve systems and related infrastructure in water treatment and distribution networks. This role involves independent leak surveys, equipment operation, and collaboration with maintenance teams to minimize water loss and ensure system integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Leak Detection & Condition Assessment

  • Perform leak surveys on valve chambers, large-diameter pipeline valves, and system appurtenances using acoustic listening devices, correlators, and pressure loggers.

  • Analyze sounds and pressure data to pinpoint leak locations and determine severity.

  • Conduct systematic valve zone inspections and proactively identify deteriorating or leaking components.

Data Collection & Reporting

  • Accurately document findings using mobile data entry systems or CMMS platforms.

  • Prepare detailed leak reports including suspected leak type, estimated flow loss, GPS location, and follow-up recommendations.

  • Maintain leak history logs for assigned zones and valve segments.

Valve Operations Support

  • Support isolation and pressure testing activities in conjunction with valve maintenance teams.

  • Identify valve-related causes of leaks, such as packing failure, stem seal wear, and corrosion.

  • Recommend repairs or replacements and coordinate with repair crews.

Safety & Equipment Handling

  • Operate leak detection equipment safely and ensure tools are calibrated and maintained.

  • Adhere to safety protocols in confined spaces, traffic zones, and near pressurized systems.

  • Lead by example in safe field practices and environmental awareness.

Key Focus Areas

  • Leak detection and valve performance monitoring

  • Field diagnostics and leak reporting

  • Collaboration with valve maintenance and repair teams

  • Equipment handling and safety compliance

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Technical training in utility inspection, water systems, or mechanical diagnostics preferred

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of field experience in leak detection, water distribution, or valve maintenance

  • Proficiency with acoustic and digital leak detection equipment (e.g., correlators, ground mics, pressure loggers)

Skills:

  • Solid understanding of valve types, operations, and common failure modes

  • Ability to distinguish leak signatures and environmental interference

  • Competent in reading maps, GIS, and distribution schematics

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

  • Physically fit for outdoor work and confined space entry
