Inspection Engineer – Boilers (API 510 / NBIC Certified)

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Inspection Engineer is responsible for independently performing in-service inspections, documentation, and fitness-for-service assessments of boilers and pressure vessels in accordance with API 510, NBIC, and applicable regulatory codes. This role involves routine and outage inspections, coordination with maintenance teams, evaluation of inspection data, and preparation of detailed technical reports to support safe and reliable operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform code-compliant inspections of boilers, heaters, pressure vessels, and piping systems under API 510 and NBIC guidelines.

  • Evaluate corrosion, erosion, pitting, weld integrity, and operational damage using field measurements and NDT results.

  • Conduct or coordinate non-destructive testing (UT, PT, MT, VT) and interpret inspection findings.

  • Prepare and review inspection plans, isometric sketches, thickness reports, and repair scopes.

  • Participate in shutdown/outage inspections, hydrotests, and post-repair verification.

  • Recommend appropriate repair or replacement actions, and ensure documentation aligns with jurisdictional and company standards.

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams on root cause analysis and inspection scheduling.

  • Maintain digital inspection records in integrity management systems (IMS) or RBI platforms.

  • Support implementation of risk-based inspection (RBI) methodologies and inspection interval optimizations.

  • Monitor and follow up on inspection recommendations and equipment condition monitoring.


Key Focus Areas:

  1. Code-Based Pressure Equipment Inspections

    • Apply API 510 and NBIC codes to assess mechanical integrity and ensure regulatory compliance.

  2. Condition Assessment & NDT Interpretation

    • Evaluate degradation mechanisms and identify fitness-for-service conditions.

  3. Shutdown/Outage Inspection Execution

    • Perform comprehensive inspections during critical path windows and support safe re-commissioning.

  4. Inspection Planning & Documentation

    • Develop inspection work scopes and maintain accurate records for audits and compliance.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or related technical field.

  • 4–8 years of relevant experience in boiler and pressure vessel inspections.

  • Valid certifications in:

    • API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspector (mandatory)

    • NBIC “IS” – Inservice Inspector (mandatory or strongly preferred)

  • Working knowledge of ASME Section I, IV, V, and VIII, and jurisdictional boiler codes.

  • Experience coordinating and interpreting NDT (UT, PT, MT, RT, VT) results.

  • Familiarity with inspection software platforms, RBI tools, and CMMS.

  • Good analytical and communication skills, with the ability to interface with cross-functional teams.
