Job Title: HVAC Technician – Plant Facilities

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior HVAC Technician to lead and execute advanced HVAC operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting within a power plant environment. This role requires deep technical knowledge of industrial HVAC systems, a strong commitment to safety and reliability, and the ability to mentor junior technicians while coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure optimal facility performance.

Key Responsibilities

System Oversight & Expert Troubleshooting

  • Lead monitoring, diagnostics, and fault resolution for HVAC systems including centrifugal and screw chillers, VRF systems, CRAC units, VAV systems, exhaust systems, and ventilation networks.

  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues using advanced diagnostic tools and HVAC logic.

  • Ensure uninterrupted HVAC performance for critical zones (e.g., control rooms, battery rooms, MCCs, server/data closets).

Preventive & Predictive Maintenance Leadership

  • Oversee execution of preventive maintenance schedules, system calibrations, and inspections for rotating and static HVAC equipment.

  • Apply predictive techniques (vibration analysis, thermography, refrigerant monitoring) to identify issues before failure.

  • Ensure all maintenance tasks follow OEM specifications and internal standards.

System Optimization & Energy Efficiency

  • Collaborate with engineers and controls teams to optimize HVAC system operation via VFD tuning, airflow balancing, and adaptive setpoints.

  • Provide input on energy-saving projects and assist with commissioning of retrofitted or upgraded HVAC assets.

  • Identify and implement HVAC reliability and energy efficiency improvements.

Project & Team Leadership

  • Lead field execution of HVAC upgrades, shutdowns, and overhauls.

  • Supervise and mentor junior technicians, assign daily tasks, and ensure safe and efficient execution.

  • Interface with contractors and vendors during HVAC installations, retrofits, or inspections.

Safety & Compliance Management

  • Enforce strict adherence to LOTO, confined space, hot work, and PPE protocols.

  • Ensure compliance with ASHRAE standards, SMACNA guidelines, OSHA regulations, and refrigerant handling laws.

  • Participate in and support audits, EHS inspections, and risk assessments related to HVAC systems.

Documentation & Technical Reporting

  • Maintain high-quality documentation, including equipment history, service reports, refrigerant logs, and root cause analyses.

  • Update CMMS entries and contribute to the preparation of reliability or incident investigation reports.

  • Support drawing revisions, HVAC schematics, and operational procedure updates after modifications.

Key Focus Areas

  • Lead HVAC system diagnostics and maintenance across critical plant infrastructure

  • Mentor and guide technical staff while ensuring high safety and performance standards

  • Optimize HVAC energy performance in collaboration with engineering teams

  • Manage complex HVAC repair or retrofit projects from a field execution perspective

  • Ensure compliance with safety codes, refrigerant regulations, and plant procedures

 Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • Technical Diploma, ITI, or Associate Degree in HVAC, Refrigeration, or Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Bachelor’s degree is a plus for supervisory growth

Certifications (Preferred):

  • EPA Section 608 (Universal), OSHA 30, HVAC OEM certifications (Carrier, Trane, etc.)

  • Additional certifications such as LEED GA, CFC handling, or advanced HVAC controls are advantageous

Experience:

  • 5+ years of hands-on HVAC experience in power plants, industrial facilities, or mission-critical infrastructure

  • Proven track record of independently resolving complex HVAC issues and leading maintenance teams

  • Experience with BMS/SCADA interaction and field-level HVAC control logic preferred

Skills:

  • Expert in diagnosing and repairing mechanical/electrical HVAC faults

  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and HVAC plans

  • Familiar with HVAC integration in industrial automation and energy management systems

  • Strong leadership, communication, and technical documentation skills

  • Safety-focused with ability to manage high-stakes systems in critical environments
