HVAC Design Engineer – GMP and Cleanroom Standards

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Mid-Level HVAC Design Engineer with proven experience designing systems for GMP-regulated and cleanroom-controlled environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of HVAC fundamentals, cleanroom classifications, and the regulatory requirements for temperature, humidity, and contamination control in life sciences or advanced tech manufacturing facilities. You will play a key role in the design and coordination of HVAC systems that ensure environmental compliance, product integrity, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design HVAC systems for cleanrooms, laboratories, manufacturing suites, and other GMP-controlled spaces in compliance with ISO 14644, FDA, EU GMP, and ASHRAE standards.

  • Conduct HVAC load calculations, ductwork and piping layout, and airflow balancing with respect to cleanliness levels, temperature, humidity, and pressure cascade requirements.

  • Develop engineering drawings, control schematics, and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, and HVAC design software.

  • Prepare equipment schedules and technical specifications for AHUs, terminal HEPA filters, exhaust systems, chillers, and humidity control units.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (process, architectural, electrical, controls, validation) to align HVAC design with facility and process needs.

  • Support the development of control sequences and assist in commissioning and validation activities (e.g., DQ, IQ, OQ).

  • Review vendor submittals and ensure HVAC system components meet design and GMP requirements.

  • Participate in client meetings, site inspections, and FAT/SAT processes as needed.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Cleanroom HVAC Design:
Design for ISO 5–8 environments, focusing on airflow patterns, pressure zoning, filtration, and air change rates.

  2. GMP Compliance & Documentation:
Understand and implement cGMP and regulatory requirements into system design and documentation.

  3. Systems Integration:
Coordinate HVAC system design with process requirements and building automation systems (BAS/BMS).

  4. Technical Detailing & CAD Modeling:
Produce accurate and efficient layouts and detail drawings that reflect project needs and cleanroom protocols.

  5. Project Coordination & Field Support:
Engage in multi-disciplinary coordination and support during installation, commissioning, and validation stages.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • 3–6 years of experience in HVAC design, with at least 2 years in GMP/cleanroom environments.

  • Proficient with HVAC design tools such as HAP, TRACE 700, and BIM software (Revit, AutoCAD).

  • Working knowledge of cleanroom classifications (ISO 14644), ASHRAE standards, and GMP guidelines.

  • Strong understanding of air distribution design, airflow visualization, and contamination control.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills for working with technical teams and clients.

  • Ability to manage time, deliverables, and documentation for multiple projects.
