HVAC Design Engineer – GMP and Cleanroom Standards

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior HVAC Design Engineer to assist in the design and development of HVAC systems for GMP-regulated environments, including cleanrooms, labs, and controlled environments in pharmaceutical and high-tech manufacturing facilities. This role supports senior engineers and project teams by performing calculations, preparing drawings, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory guidelines.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer looking to specialize in critical environment HVAC design with direct exposure to cleanroom classifications, pressure zoning, air change rates, and FDA/EU GMP requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of HVAC systems for cleanrooms, laboratories, and GMP manufacturing spaces.

  • Perform basic load calculations, airflow distribution planning, and duct/pipe sizing under supervision.

  • Support development of HVAC layout drawings, control diagrams, and P&IDs using AutoCAD or Revit.

  • Research and apply relevant codes and standards including ISO 14644, ASHRAE, cGMP, and FDA guidelines.

  • Coordinate with architectural, process, electrical, and plumbing teams to align HVAC design with facility needs.

  • Review manufacturer specifications and assist in equipment selection (e.g., AHUs, HEPA filters, chillers).

  • Participate in system commissioning and validation documentation preparation (DQ, IQ, OQ support).

  • Assist with field surveys and site inspections as needed.

  • Prepare and maintain design documentation, schedules, and reports for internal and client use.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. GMP-Compliant HVAC Design

    • Support cleanroom and critical environment HVAC design in compliance with FDA and EU GMP guidelines.

  2. Cleanroom Standards & Classification

    • Learn to apply ISO 14644 standards to maintain environmental control, pressure cascades, and air change rates.

  3. Technical Documentation & CAD Tools

    • Use Revit/AutoCAD and Excel to develop engineering drawings and design calculations.

  4. Cross-Disciplinary Coordination

    • Work with process, architectural, and validation teams to ensure integrated facility performance.

  5. Regulatory Understanding

    • Gain working knowledge of validation, documentation, and risk-based approaches for regulated environments.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC principles, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.

  • Familiarity with cleanroom environments or interest in critical systems design is preferred.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit; experience with HVAC design software is a plus.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Eagerness to learn GMP, ISO, and validation processes.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks under guidance.
