Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: HVAC Controls Technician – DDC/BMS/SCADA Integration

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and technically inclined Junior HVAC Controls Technician to support the setup, calibration, and basic troubleshooting of DDC (Direct Digital Control) systems integrated with BMS and SCADA platforms. This entry-level role is ideal for individuals beginning a career in HVAC automation, combining knowledge of HVAC equipment with foundational experience in control systems and industrial monitoring tools.

Key Responsibilities

Control System Support

  • Assist in the installation, wiring, and commissioning of HVAC control devices including sensors, actuators, relays, VFDs, and controllers.

  • Support basic programming and setup of DDC controllers (e.g., Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Siemens, Tridium/Niagara).

  • Monitor control panels and HMI interfaces for HVAC system alarms and status updates.

BMS/SCADA Integration Assistance

  • Help with integrating HVAC components into Building Management Systems (BMS) and SCADA platforms under senior guidance.

  • Learn to map I/O points and configure graphics for system dashboards.

  • Assist in verifying that HVAC system parameters (temperature, pressure, flow, humidity) are being correctly read and logged.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

  • Support troubleshooting of faulty sensors, communication issues (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, LON), and actuator malfunctions.

  • Learn to use diagnostic tools such as multimeters, testers, and laptop-based software for identifying basic faults.

  • Document observations and escalate unresolved issues to senior technicians or controls engineers.

Preventive Maintenance & Calibration

  • Assist in routine checks and calibrations of field devices including temperature sensors, pressure transducers, and control valves.

  • Participate in preventive maintenance tasks as part of system health management.

  • Help ensure equipment is labeled, logged, and compliant with documentation standards.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain daily logs of system performance, fault events, and corrective actions.

  • Help update control wiring diagrams, device lists, and I/O schedules.

  • Support documentation for compliance with HVAC control standards and audit preparation.

Learning & Development

  • Participate in structured training related to HVAC controls, BAS protocols, and energy management principles.

  • Gain exposure to HVAC system operation, automation logic, and plant operational workflows.

  • Work closely with senior controls technicians and engineers to build knowledge of system architecture and network protocols.

Key Focus Areas

  • Assist with HVAC control system wiring and commissioning

  • Learn DDC/BMS configuration, logic, and integration basics

  • Support sensor and actuator calibration

  • Help monitor and log HVAC system performance

  • Build foundational skills in HVAC automation technologies

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • Diploma or Technical Certification in HVAC, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or related field

  • Basic coursework in controls, automation, or building systems preferred

Certifications (Preferred or Willing to Obtain):

  • Tridium/Niagara Fundamentals, Siemens Building Automation, or Honeywell DDC training

  • OSHA safety or basic electrical safety certification is a plus

Experience:

  • 0–2 years of hands-on experience with HVAC systems, controls wiring, or BMS platforms

  • Internship or exposure to building automation or industrial control systems is advantageous

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of HVAC system components and control logic

  • Familiarity with sensors, relays, low-voltage control wiring, and safety interlocks

  • Willingness to learn protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LON

  • Proficient with MS Excel, basic drafting, and digital documentation

  • Strong analytical mindset, eagerness to learn, and good communication skills
