HVAC Controls Engineer – Automation and Monitoring Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level HVAC Controls Engineer – Automation and Monitoring Systems is responsible for designing, programming, and implementing automation solutions for HVAC systems in marine, offshore, and industrial environments. This role involves configuring PLCs, HMIs, and remote monitoring systems, integrating field devices, and ensuring compliance with relevant control and communication standards. The engineer plays a key role in system commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimizing control sequences for efficiency and reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Design and implement control logic, PLC programming, and HMI development for complex HVAC systems (chillers, AHUs, VAVs, exhaust systems, etc.).

    • Integrate sensors, actuators, and instrumentation into control panels and field networks.

    • Develop detailed control narratives, sequences of operation (SOO), and interface protocols (e.g., Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet/IP).

    • Lead or assist in the commissioning and functional testing of automation systems on-site or at FAT/SAT events.

    • Troubleshoot control system issues and provide remote or field-based support for installed systems.

    • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to ensure system-level compatibility and safe operation.

    • Configure remote monitoring, alarm, and logging systems for HVAC equipment via SCADA or cloud-based platforms.

    • Create and maintain as-built documentation, including I/O lists, loop diagrams, wiring schematics, and control panel layouts.

    • Ensure systems comply with marine/offshore regulations (ABS, DNV, USCG) and cybersecurity guidelines where applicable.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. PLC/HMI Programming & Integration
    – Design and deploy automated control solutions using platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Schneider.

  2. System Commissioning & Field Support
    – Lead testing, tuning, and issue resolution during HVAC system commissioning on vessels or offshore assets.

  3. Data Acquisition & Monitoring Tools
    – Implement and support remote telemetry systems, dashboards, and fault detection logic for performance optimization.

  4. Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
    – Ensure control systems meet industry codes and marine classification requirements, with full documentation and traceability.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Control Systems Engineering.

    • 3–6 years of experience in HVAC control systems design, programming, and commissioning, ideally in marine or industrial environments.

    • Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming (e.g., TIA Portal, RSLogix, Codesys, Citect, WinCC).

    • Experience with sensor and actuator integration, VFD control, PID tuning, and alarm management.

    • Strong understanding of control theory, HVAC operation, and industrial communication protocols.

    • Ability to interpret and produce wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, and loop drawings.

    • Solid documentation and troubleshooting skills.

    • Familiarity with SCADA, BMS/BAS, or IoT-based HVAC monitoring systems.

Preferred:

    • Experience with marine or offshore HVAC systems, including hazardous area control design.

    • Knowledge of ABS, USCG, DNV, or SOLAS regulations related to shipboard HVAC automation.

    • Exposure to cybersecure HVAC systems, control redundancy, and fault-tolerant architectures.

    • Experience with data analytics tools or condition-based monitoring platforms.
