Field Service Technician – Hydro Energy Units

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Field Service Technician – Hydro Energy Units is responsible for executing mechanical field service tasks related to the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and commissioning of hydro turbines, generators, and associated auxiliary systems. The technician works both independently and as part of a field service team to ensure operational reliability of hydro energy units at various project and plant sites. The role requires hands-on experience, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Maintenance & Repair:

    • Perform disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of hydro turbines, governors, gates, penstocks, and related systems.

    • Troubleshoot mechanical faults and assist in executing corrective and preventive maintenance actions.

  • Installation & Commissioning:

    • Support installation and alignment of hydro-mechanical components including bearings, shafts, runners, and seals.

    • Participate in commissioning checks, test runs, and performance validation for new or overhauled units.

  • Field Inspection & Diagnostics:

    • Conduct visual inspections and measurements (e.g., runout, clearance, shaft alignment) to assess component condition.

    • Record wear patterns, collect oil/lubricant samples, and report mechanical abnormalities.

  • Technical Documentation:

    • Complete service reports, maintenance checklists, and inspection logs with accuracy.

    • Provide input to technical documentation, including work instructions and job safety assessments.

  • Safety & Compliance:

    • Follow field safety protocols including confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), rigging safety, and PPE usage.

    • Ensure all activities comply with company and regulatory safety standards.

  • Tool Handling & Equipment Setup:

    • Use mechanical tools, hydraulic jacks, alignment kits, and precision measuring instruments.

    • Maintain and prepare field service toolkits and ensure proper calibration of equipment.

  • Team Collaboration & Guidance:

    • Collaborate with senior technicians, engineers, and contractors during complex service tasks.

    • Provide basic guidance to junior technicians or apprentices as needed.


Key Focus Areas:

  1. Hydro Mechanical Maintenance Execution:
    Conduct field maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of turbines and hydro plant components.

  2. Equipment Installation & Alignment:
    Install and align rotating and static hydro components during shutdowns or commissioning phases.

  3. Diagnostics & Inspections:
    Perform field-based diagnostics, visual inspections, and measurements to ensure equipment integrity.

  4. Safety & Field Readiness:
    Adhere to all safety standards and prepare job sites, tools, and documentation for efficient execution.

  5. Documentation & Reporting:
    Maintain detailed field service records, inspection logs, and contribute to reliability data tracking.

  6. Technical Competency Building:
    Continuously improve technical skills in hydroelectric systems, including exposure to Kaplan, Francis, and Pelton units.


Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field.

  • 3–6 years of experience in hydro plant maintenance or industrial field service roles.

  • Proficiency in mechanical tools, alignment methods, and basic hydro turbine systems.

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and interpret OEM service manuals.

  • Experience working in hydroelectric plants or renewable energy sites preferred.

  • Willingness to travel frequently and work in outdoor and remote locations.

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and safety-first mindset.
