Feedwater System Technician

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Feedwater System Technician is a technical expert responsible for the advanced operation, optimization, and maintenance of feedwater systems supporting industrial boilers and steam generation processes. This role leads troubleshooting efforts, ensures compliance with operational and safety standards, and mentors junior staff. The technician plays a vital role in system reliability, energy efficiency, and long-term asset integrity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently operate, monitor, and adjust feedwater systems including pumps, control valves, deaerators, preheaters, economizers, and condensate return units.

  • Conduct advanced diagnostics on feedwater pump performance, cavitation issues, flow regulation, and chemical imbalances.

  • Supervise or lead corrective and preventive maintenance tasks, including component replacement and overhaul of critical feedwater equipment.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to implement improvements that enhance feedwater and boiler efficiency.

  • Oversee water chemistry programs—monitoring oxygen levels, hardness, pH, and conductivity—to ensure protection against corrosion and scale.

  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track work orders, maintenance history, and system performance trends.

  • Ensure all activities comply with ASME Section I, NBIC, and OSHA standards.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level technicians.

  • Participate in root cause analysis and failure investigations related to feedwater or boiler-related incidents.

  • Support audits, inspections, and documentation related to compliance, insurance, or regulatory authorities.

🎯 Key Focus Areas:

  1. Advanced Feedwater System Management

    • Ensure precise control of flow, temperature, and pressure to optimize steam generation and energy use.

  2. Performance Optimization & Troubleshooting

    • Diagnose and resolve complex operational issues with a focus on improving system reliability and reducing downtime.

  3. Water Chemistry & Boiler Protection

    • Monitor and adjust feedwater quality to protect boiler components and extend service life.

  4. Leadership & Mentorship

    • Guide junior staff, promote safe work practices, and ensure team alignment with operational goals.

  5. Compliance & Reporting

    • Uphold regulatory standards, contribute to audits, and maintain accurate documentation of system performance and maintenance activities.

📘 Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Plant Technology, or a related technical field.

  • 5–8 years of experience with industrial boiler feedwater systems in a plant, utility, or energy-intensive facility.

  • Deep understanding of mechanical systems related to steam generation and feedwater treatment.

  • Experience with ASME Section I boiler operation and NBIC compliance.

  • Strong proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical systems, including centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.

  • Familiarity with SCADA/BMS/PLC systems used in utilities or plant environments.

  • Demonstrated leadership in maintenance teams or operations crews.
