The Senior Fabrication Technician is a skilled expert responsible for leading complex fabrication tasks involving the cutting, forming, and assembly of marine components and structures. This role requires in-depth technical knowledge of marine-grade materials, fabrication tolerances, and construction methods. The technician ensures high-quality, code-compliant fabrication practices, mentors junior team members, and collaborates closely with welding, QC, and production teams to deliver accurate, ready-to-install assemblies.
Independently interpret and execute complex fabrication drawings, sketches, and specifications to fabricate structural components, foundations, outfitting supports, and modular units.
Operate and oversee the use of cutting equipment (plasma/oxy-fuel cutters, shears, saws) and forming machinery (press brakes, rollers, bending machines) for plates, beams, and pipe elements.
Lead and perform high-precision layout, marking, fit-up, and tack welding of marine assemblies in compliance with fabrication standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, NAVSEA).
Coordinate with supervisors and welding teams to plan and execute fabrication sequences for large or complex ship sections, hull components, and outfitting structures.
Verify alignment, squareness, and tolerances of fitted components using precision measuring tools such as calipers, levels, squares, and gauges.
Perform QA pre-checks on fit-ups and identify deviations, potential weld distortion risks, or material mismatches before final welding.
Serve as the go-to technician for troubleshooting fabrication challenges and mentoring junior technicians on safe, efficient practices.
Collaborate with QA/QC, engineering, and foremen to resolve drawing conflicts, recommend corrective actions, and propose fabrication improvements.
Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, PPE use, and housekeeping within the work zone.
Participate in shift planning, material staging, and job handovers to support production continuity.
Technical diploma or certified trade qualification in Metal Fabrication, Marine Construction, or Mechanical Assembly.
7–10+ years of experience in marine or offshore fabrication environments with demonstrated expertise in structural and modular assembly.
Proficient in multi-material fabrication including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and Cu-Ni.
Strong knowledge of marine codes and fabrication standards (ABS, DNV, ISO, AWS D1.1).
Skilled in using a wide range of manual and CNC fabrication tools and equipment.
Excellent blueprint reading skills and ability to detect and correct inconsistencies in design or execution.
Solid understanding of weld preparation, distortion control, and sequence planning.
Experience in modular construction, block assembly, or outfitting integration for commercial or defense vessels.
Certified in overhead crane, forklift, or rigging operations.
Basic knowledge of QA/QC and dimensional control tools (e.g., total station, laser alignment).
Exposure to team leadership or fabrication crew coordination.
Role is hands-on and workshop-based, with possible assignments on board vessels or offshore structures.
Involves physical tasks such as lifting, bending, climbing, and working in confined or elevated areas.
PPE is mandatory; work may occur in high-temperature, noisy, or dusty environments.
Overtime, night shifts, or weekend work may be required to meet project schedules.
