Roles & Responsibilities

The Fabrication Shop Manager – Marine Components and Subsystems is responsible for overseeing all fabrication operations related to marine structural components, foundations, brackets, and subsystem supports. This includes supervising day-to-day shop activities, managing skilled trades personnel, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards, and coordinating with engineering and planning departments to meet production goals.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise fabrication operations for marine structural components, foundations, and support systems.

  • Coordinate shop activities including cutting, forming, fitting, and welding of steel and aluminum materials.

  • Ensure timely completion of work orders and job packages in alignment with production schedules.

  • Enforce compliance with project specifications, engineering drawings, and applicable welding codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, ABS, DNV).

  • Lead a team of welders, fabricators, fitters, and material handlers, assigning tasks and monitoring performance.

  • Conduct daily toolbox talks, safety briefings, and inspections to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Collaborate with engineering, quality control, and logistics teams to resolve technical and material issues.

  • Monitor equipment maintenance schedules and coordinate repair needs to minimize downtime.

  • Maintain traceability of materials, consumables, and weld documentation as per customer and class requirements.

  • Implement lean fabrication practices to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and increase shop throughput.

  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as productivity, rework rates, and schedule adherence.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Welding/Fabrication Technology.

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in marine or industrial fabrication, with 3+ years in a supervisory or managerial role.

  • In-depth knowledge of marine component fabrication techniques and industry standards.

  • Strong understanding of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW), metalworking equipment, and material specifications.

  • Ability to interpret complex fabrication drawings, shop plans, and work instructions.

  • Proven leadership and team management skills in a high-output environment.

  • Familiarity with quality systems, material traceability, and shop floor documentation.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent welding supervision credentials.

  • Experience working in a shipyard or marine equipment manufacturing environment.

  • Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and production tracking tools.

  • Training in lean manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.


Working Conditions:

  • Primarily shop floor environment with exposure to noise, welding, grinding, and heavy equipment.

  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all safety protocols.

  • May require flexible working hours, including weekends or extended shifts during peak workload periods.
