Engineering Manager – Marine Valves and Piping Systems

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager – Marine Valves and Piping Systems is responsible for leading engineering design, analysis, and integration activities for shipboard and offshore piping systems, including the selection and configuration of valves and related flow control components. This role manages a multidisciplinary team supporting both newbuild and retrofit projects, ensuring all mechanical fluid systems meet performance, regulatory, and classification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and supervise a team of engineers and designers focused on the development and integration of piping systems and valve assemblies for marine and offshore applications.

    • Oversee system design for ballast, bilge, firefighting, fuel, cooling, steam, compressed air, and hydraulic circuits.

    • Manage the specification, selection, and sizing of valves (manual, actuated, control, relief, check) and ensure compatibility with piping system designs.

    • Ensure compliance with marine codes and regulations (USCG, ABS, DNV, IMO, ASME, API, MARPOL) throughout design and documentation processes.

    • Review and approve P&IDs, piping layouts, isometrics, valve schedules, and material specifications.

    • Coordinate with project managers, procurement teams, and shipyards on material requisitions, installation logistics, and vendor submittals.

    • Support testing, inspection, and commissioning of piping and valve systems, including pressure testing, flushing, and functional checks.

    • Provide technical direction during shipboard integration, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures.

    • Implement continuous improvement initiatives in design processes, valve standardization, and lifecycle documentation.

    • Serve as technical liaison with classification societies, clients, and third-party reviewers during audits or design approval stages.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Valve and Flow Control Engineering: Manage technical aspects of marine valve selection, configuration, actuation, and system performance.

    • Piping System Design: Ensure robust design and integration of shipboard piping systems under space, weight, and corrosion constraints.

    • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of marine codes, safety standards, and fluid system engineering best practices.

    • Team Leadership and Review: Provide leadership in team development, peer review, and technical mentoring for junior staff.

Qualifications & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related field.

    • 8–15 years of engineering experience in marine piping and valve systems, including 3+ years in a technical leadership or managerial role.

    • Proficiency in P&IDs, valve datasheets, pipe stress analysis, and 3D modeling tools (AutoCAD Plant 3D, AVEVA Marine, SolidWorks).

    • Strong understanding of material compatibility, pipe classes, and fluid dynamics in marine environments.

    • Working knowledge of industry standards: ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASTM, API, ISO, USCG, ABS, and IMO regulations.

Preferred Certifications:

    • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

    • PMP® certification or formal project management training.

    • Offshore or shipboard safety certifications (e.g., BOSIET, STCW, OSHA).
