Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Operations – Boiler Plant is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of boiler plants supporting marine construction, vessel repair, or offshore energy operations. This role ensures optimal performance of high-pressure steam systems and thermal utilities used in propulsion testing, outfitting, and platform support. The director will lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver uninterrupted boiler services, manage risk, and ensure compliance with industry and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Direct day-to-day operations of boiler plant facilities servicing marine vessels, fabrication yards, or offshore platforms.

    • Manage high-pressure boiler systems, auxiliary steam infrastructure, condensate recovery, and thermal utilities to meet operational demands.

    • Develop and implement operating procedures, emergency response protocols, and maintenance schedules aligned with safety and performance standards.

    • Lead facility readiness for newbuild vessel commissioning, propulsion testing, or offshore energy deployment.

    • Oversee inspections, repairs, shutdowns, and upgrades in coordination with engineering and project management teams.

    • Ensure full compliance with environmental, safety, and operational regulations (OSHA, EPA, ASME, IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL).

    • Coordinate with shipyard project teams, offshore operations, contractors, and technical vendors to align boiler operations with work schedules.

    • Manage plant operations staff, including engineers, boiler operators, technicians, and safety personnel.

    • Establish KPIs and continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize fuel and resource usage.

    • Prepare and manage operations budgets, equipment procurement, and service contracts.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Boiler Plant Reliability: Ensure continuous and safe operation of boiler and steam distribution systems in demanding industrial or maritime environments.

    • Operational Readiness: Support vessel testing, outfitting, and offshore operations with reliable steam and thermal utility services.

    • Maintenance Management: Oversee predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance strategies for plant systems and components.

    • Safety & Compliance: Drive a zero-incident safety culture and ensure regulatory compliance with local, national, and maritime codes.

    • Team Leadership: Develop and manage a high-performing technical operations team with clear training, performance, and accountability frameworks.

Qualifications & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Industrial Operations, or related field.

    • 12–18+ years of experience in steam plant operations, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or facility management role.

    • Strong technical knowledge of marine boiler systems, auxiliary steam plant operations, and high-pressure equipment.

    • Proven success in managing complex industrial or shipyard operations involving thermal utilities and energy systems.

    • Familiarity with ASME boiler codes, OSHA regulations, maritime safety standards, and emissions protocols.

    • Strong budgeting, project planning, and stakeholder coordination skills.

Preferred Credentials / Experience:

    • Professional Engineer (PE) License or Stationary Engineer Certification.

    • Chief Engineer license (marine) or prior shipboard experience with steam plants.

    • Experience with offshore energy platforms, LNG terminals, or naval/military shipyard operations.

    • Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or Operations Management.
