Director of Marine Systems Integration – HVAC and Life Support

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Marine Systems Integration – HVAC and Life Support leads the design coordination, technical alignment, and systems integration of shipboard environmental control systems, including HVAC, air purification, pressurization, and life support subsystems. This role ensures seamless functional integration across mechanical, electrical, and automation systems for naval, commercial, and offshore platforms, with a strong focus on performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead cross-functional integration of HVAC, air handling, ventilation, fire suppression, oxygen management, CO₂ scrubbing, and other life support systems aboard marine vessels.

    • Serve as the technical authority for full lifecycle integration — from concept design through commissioning — ensuring all subsystems function cohesively under varying operational conditions.

    • Align environmental and life support systems with shipboard power, control, automation (BMS), structural and spatial constraints.

    • Ensure all systems comply with relevant maritime codes and standards: IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ASHRAE, USCG, and class societies (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s).

    • Direct system layout planning, duct routing, controls interfacing, redundancy management, and failure mode mitigation strategies.

    • Interface with naval architects, shipyard engineering teams, automation vendors, and classification bodies to manage technical reviews and approvals.

    • Lead systems-level design reviews, risk assessments (FMEA), HAZOP studies, and control philosophy validations.

    • Oversee system integration documentation including I/O lists, integration diagrams, test procedures, and validation protocols.

    • Support commissioning, FAT/SAT, and sea trials to ensure integrated system performance under operational conditions.

    • Build and lead a high-performing integration team with mechanical, controls, and marine systems expertise.

Key Focus Areas:

    1. Systems-Level Integration and Architecture

      • Deliver functionally integrated HVAC and life support systems that are reliable, maintainable, and operationally synchronized.

    2. Safety and Redundancy Management

      • Ensure systems support emergency scenarios such as smoke extraction, fire zone isolation, and contamination control.

    3. Control and Automation Synchronization

      • Align system behavior with shipboard control and monitoring platforms (BMS, SCADA, PLCs, etc.).

    4. Compliance and Certification

      • Lead integration strategy to meet classification society and maritime regulatory approvals.

    5. Cross-Disciplinary Coordination

      • Bridge mechanical, electrical, controls, and structural interfaces across all phases of vessel design and construction.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.

    • 10+ years of experience in marine HVAC, life support, or environmental systems, with 5+ years in systems integration or lead roles.

    • Proven track record managing multi-disciplinary integration projects on naval, commercial, or offshore vessels.

    • Expertise in system-level engineering, interface control, and lifecycle integration of critical shipboard systems.

    • In-depth knowledge of maritime standards (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL), HVAC engineering, and system control philosophies.

    • Experience with modeling tools (AutoCAD, Revit, E3.series, or similar), HVAC simulation tools (HAP, CFD), and system design software.

    • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills.

    • Capable of managing complex timelines, budgets, and system maturity milestones.

Preferred:

    • Experience with submarines, defense vessels, offshore platforms, or polar-class ships with advanced life support requirements.

    • Knowledge of digital ship integration platforms (e.g., digital twins, model-based systems engineering).

    • Familiarity with cybersecurity and fault-tolerant control systems in HVAC/life support applications.

    • Certification in systems engineering (INCOSE, CSEP), project management (PMP), or marine systems (IMarEST, SNAME).
