Director of Marine Mechanical Integration

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Marine Mechanical Integration is responsible for leading the integration of mechanical systems across complex marine platforms, including naval vessels, commercial ships, and offshore structures. This role oversees system compatibility, space management, machinery alignment, fluid systems routing, and cross-disciplinary coordination to ensure full mechanical integration within platform design and production.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in marine systems and leadership experience managing system-level integration across multiple engineering disciplines and lifecycle phases.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead all mechanical integration activities across propulsion, auxiliary systems, HVAC, piping, and deck machinery.

    • Ensure coherent system layout and integration within ship compartments, machinery spaces, and confined marine environments.

    • Oversee design coordination across disciplines (naval architecture, electrical, controls, structural) to ensure space, weight, and interface requirements are met.

    • Drive the configuration and alignment of rotating machinery, shaft lines, and fluid systems for optimal performance and maintainability.

    • Manage interface control documentation (ICDs), system diagrams, 3D model reviews, and equipment placement strategy.

    • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and classification society standards (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, USCG, MIL-STD).

    • Support ship production teams during installation, alignment, and integration activities at shipyards or build sites.

    • Lead mechanical design reviews, integration walkthroughs, and clash detection in digital models.

    • Collaborate with supply chain, program management, and customers to align mechanical integration scope with schedules and budgets.

    • Foster a culture of quality, safety, and innovation in marine mechanical integration and shipboard system delivery.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. System-Level Integration Leadership

    • Ensure seamless interaction between propulsion, HVAC, fluid systems, and structural elements in marine vessels.

  2. Space Management & Machinery Alignment

    • Optimize layout, access, and system routing within spatial constraints of marine platforms.

  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Coordinate closely with electrical, structural, controls, and production teams for holistic integration.

  4. Regulatory Compliance & Standards

    • Maintain strict adherence to classification rules and marine mechanical codes.

  5. Digital Design & Review

    • Lead model integration reviews using CAD/PLM tools, clash detection, and interface resolution.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering.

    • 12+ years of marine mechanical systems experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership or integration role.

    • Strong expertise in propulsion systems, shaft alignment, fluid systems (fuel, ballast, HVAC, lube oil), and marine machinery.

    • Experience in ship design, new construction, or ship modernization projects.

    • Familiarity with 3D modeling tools (e.g., AVEVA Marine, AutoCAD, Siemens NX, ShipConstructor) and integration platforms.

    • Deep understanding of classification society standards and regulatory requirements.

    • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-discipline coordination skills.

    • Ability to manage complex schedules, technical documentation, and team deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • PE license or Chartered Engineer status.

    • Experience with defense/naval platforms or commercial shipbuilding.

    • Knowledge of digital twin, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), or systems integration tools.

    • Experience with shipyard integration processes and commissioning practices.
