Director of HVAC Engineering – Marine Division

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of HVAC Engineering – Marine Division is responsible for leading the end-to-end engineering of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for naval, commercial, and offshore vessels. This role ensures all HVAC system designs meet technical, operational, and regulatory standards while advancing innovation, energy efficiency, and environmental performance across marine applications.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and manage HVAC engineering design, development, and documentation across newbuild and retrofit marine projects.

    • Define and enforce engineering standards, workflows, and best practices for HVAC system sizing, layout, duct routing, and equipment selection.

    • Oversee thermal load calculations, airflow balancing, noise/vibration analysis, and integration with shipboard automation (BMS/HVAC controls).

    • Ensure full compliance with applicable marine regulations (e.g., IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ASHRAE, and classification societies like ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s).

    • Collaborate with naval architects, shipyards, mechanical systems teams, and electrical/control teams to ensure seamless HVAC integration.

    • Manage HVAC design packages for tenders, class approvals, production, and commissioning documentation.

    • Provide technical leadership in resolving complex issues related to HVAC performance, environmental control, and system optimization.

    • Mentor HVAC engineers and support ongoing professional development, training, and cross-functional collaboration.

    • Drive innovation in green HVAC systems, including energy recovery ventilation (ERV), variable refrigerant flow (VRF), and high-efficiency chillers.

    • Support supply chain and procurement teams in HVAC component selection, vendor qualification, and technical clarifications.

    • Interface with field commissioning teams and service engineers for technical support during installation and startup.

Key Focus Areas:

    1. Marine HVAC System Design Leadership

      • Deliver robust, compliant, and efficient HVAC system designs tailored to varying vessel types and mission profiles.

    2. Regulatory Compliance and Standards

      • Ensure all systems meet applicable maritime codes and environmental standards (IMO, SOLAS, ASHRAE, MARPOL Annex VI).

    3. Technical Excellence and Innovation

      • Advance engineering capabilities through digital tools, energy-efficient system strategies, and smart automation integration.

    4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

      • Align HVAC system development with broader ship systems (mechanical, electrical, environmental) through close teamwork.

    5. Team Development and Mentorship

      • Lead and grow a high-performing team of HVAC engineers and designers across disciplines and project phases.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related discipline.

    • 10+ years of experience in marine HVAC system design and engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

    • Deep understanding of thermal systems, air handling, pressurization, ventilation zoning, and marine HVAC integration.

    • Proficiency in HVAC design tools such as HAP, TRACE, Revit, AutoCAD, CFD simulation, and load calculation software.

    • Strong knowledge of marine regulations and classification standards (IMO, ASHRAE, ABS, DNV, etc.).

    • Experience coordinating with shipyards, class societies, and client technical teams.

    • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.

    • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams across geographically distributed offices or projects.

Preferred:

    • Experience with HVAC systems for specialized vessels (e.g., naval, cruise ships, offshore platforms).

    • Knowledge of smart HVAC controls, BMS integration, and remote monitoring systems.

    • Certifications such as PMP, ASHRAE CPD, or Six Sigma are a plus.

    • Active membership in professional bodies (ASHRAE, IMarEST, SNAME).
