Director of Engineering – Shipyard or Offshore Operations

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Engineering – Shipyard or Offshore Operations is responsible for managing all engineering activities related to vessel construction, overhaul, maintenance, and systems integration in shipyard or offshore environments. This role oversees a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technical staff working on propulsion, hull, piping, mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. The director ensures safe, timely, and compliant execution of engineering work across active projects while aligning with regulatory, client, and corporate standards.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership and strategic direction to engineering teams handling new construction, conversions, repair, and offshore asset support.

    • Oversee the full project lifecycle—from design and technical planning through installation, testing, commissioning, and turnover.

    • Manage resource allocation, staffing, and skill development for engineering disciplines: mechanical, marine, structural, piping, and systems.

    • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards (e.g., USCG, ABS, IMO, ASME, API, ISO) across projects.

    • Collaborate with operations, production, and quality control teams to troubleshoot design issues and resolve technical challenges in real time.

    • Drive continuous improvement in engineering execution, documentation, and digital tools (e.g., CAD, PLM, ERP systems).

    • Engage directly with clients, classification societies, and vendors on technical reviews, inspections, and change orders.

    • Monitor engineering KPIs, schedules, and budgets for multiple concurrent shipyard or offshore engineering programs.

    • Lead the development and approval of technical submittals, welding procedures, system integration drawings, and regulatory filings.

    • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture in all engineering activities, particularly for offshore or hazardous marine operations.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Technical Oversight: Ensure high-quality, code-compliant engineering across diverse marine systems and platforms.

    • Project Delivery Support: Provide expert guidance to meet critical milestones in drydock, offshore mobilization, or production environments.

    • Multidisciplinary Team Leadership: Manage and mentor engineering staff across ship systems (e.g., propulsion, HVAC, hull, piping, steam).

    • Regulatory & Client Interface: Serve as the senior engineering representative in technical meetings, audits, and regulatory reviews.

Qualifications & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.

    • 12+ years of progressive engineering experience in shipyard or offshore engineering operations, with at least 5 in a senior leadership role.

    • Expertise in shipboard systems, vessel construction methods, offshore platform equipment, and marine standards.

    • Proven track record of managing technical teams across large-scale drydockings, newbuilds, or offshore asset life extension programs.

    • Strong familiarity with industry codes and certifying bodies: ABS, DNV, USCG, ASME, IMO, API.

    • Skilled in engineering tools such as AutoCAD, AVEVA Marine, SolidWorks, and ERP/PLM platforms.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

    • PE license or Chartered Engineer status.

    • PMP® or other project management credentials.

    • Offshore safety certifications (BOSIET, HUET) if applicable.

    • Experience working with Navy, offshore drilling, LNG carriers, or heavy commercial vessels.
