Director of Engineering – Offshore Mechanical Operations

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director of Engineering – Offshore Mechanical Operations is responsible for leading the mechanical engineering strategy, execution, and technical integrity of mechanical systems across offshore platforms, vessels, and facilities. This role oversees mechanical design, installation, operations support, and maintenance engineering for offshore assets such as oil rigs, FPSOs, wind farms, or subsea infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of offshore mechanical systems and can lead cross-functional teams to ensure safe, efficient, and regulation-compliant operations.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead all aspects of mechanical engineering for offshore platforms, including rotating equipment, fluid systems, piping, HVAC, cranes, and deck machinery.

    • Oversee design, review, and approval of engineering documents for new projects, modifications, upgrades, and repairs.

    • Ensure technical compliance with offshore codes and standards (e.g., API, ISO, DNV, ABS, ASME, NORSOK).

    • Provide engineering support for offshore operations, including equipment troubleshooting, failure analysis, and root cause investigations.

    • Collaborate with offshore operations, maintenance, construction, and safety teams to support execution of offshore campaigns.

    • Lead mechanical integrity programs, including asset health monitoring, condition-based maintenance, and lifecycle planning.

    • Develop and manage budgets, schedules, and resources for engineering activities across offshore projects and assets.

    • Mentor engineering teams, promote technical excellence, and ensure knowledge sharing across offshore disciplines.

    • Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve asset performance, safety, and sustainability.

    • Interface with regulatory bodies, classification societies, and key stakeholders during audits, reviews, and certifications.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Offshore Mechanical System Leadership

    • Oversight of all critical systems including turbines, pumps, compressors, HVAC, winches, and piping networks.

  2. Reliability & Asset Integrity

    • Drive long-term performance and reliability through proactive inspection, maintenance, and integrity strategies.

  3. Compliance & Safety

    • Ensure systems meet or exceed offshore safety and environmental regulations and industry standards.

  4. Operational Support & Troubleshooting

    • Provide quick-response engineering leadership to offshore operations, especially during shutdowns or equipment failure events.

  5. Project Execution & Team Leadership

    • Lead engineering scope for brownfield modifications, greenfield projects, and ongoing asset upgrades.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine/Offshore Engineering.

    • 12–15+ years of mechanical engineering experience in offshore oil & gas, renewables, or marine industries.

    • Proven leadership of engineering teams supporting offshore or subsea mechanical systems.

    • Strong knowledge of offshore codes and standards (API, DNV, ABS, ISO, ASME, IEC).

    • Experience with mechanical system modeling, FMEAs, RCAs, and digital tools (CMMS, CAD, CAE).

    • Familiarity with offshore safety standards (HSE, SEMS, OSHA, environmental compliance).

    • Excellent project management, stakeholder communication, and team-building skills.

    • Willingness to travel offshore periodically and support field operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • PE license or chartered engineer status.

    • Offshore survival and safety certifications (e.g., BOSIET, HUET).

    • Experience with FPSO, fixed platforms, jack-up rigs, or offshore wind installations.

    • Knowledge of digital twin, remote diagnostics, or condition-based monitoring technologies.
