Director – Powertrain Component Engineering

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director – Powertrain Component Engineering will lead the design, development, validation, and industrialization of critical powertrain components including engines, transmissions, drivelines, and hybrid system components. This role is responsible for driving innovation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering cost-effective, high-performance systems for both conventional and electrified powertrain platforms.

The ideal candidate will manage a global team of engineers and collaborate cross-functionally with product planning, testing, manufacturing, and sourcing teams to achieve strategic technical and business goals.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Component Engineering Strategy

  • Define and execute a global strategy for the development of powertrain components including internal combustion engine parts, transmission gears, housings, clutch systems, torque converters, hybrid modules, and e-drive components.

  • Ensure platforms are modular, scalable, and meet performance, durability, cost, and packaging targets.

2. Design & Development Leadership

  • Oversee component design processes including 3D modeling, CAE analysis, material selection, tolerance optimization, and DVP&R planning.

  • Ensure robustness and manufacturability through DFMEA, DFM/DFA, and validation testing (thermal, mechanical, fatigue, NVH).

  • Lead the integration of advanced technologies such as lightweight materials, friction reduction coatings, and hybrid-ready architectures.

3. Program & Cross-Functional Management

  • Lead the component engineering input across full vehicle and powertrain programs.

  • Interface with systems engineering, calibration, controls, vehicle integration, and manufacturing.

  • Ensure on-time delivery of component release schedules aligned with vehicle milestones.

4. Supplier & Manufacturing Collaboration

  • Work with suppliers and internal manufacturing teams to ensure quality, cost, and delivery objectives.

  • Support sourcing decisions, tooling development, and localization efforts.

  • Guide resolution of field issues, warranty concerns, and continuous improvement actions.

5. Team Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Lead and mentor a global team of component engineers, analysts, and project leads.

  • Build internal capability in core areas such as gear design, metallurgy, sealing systems, bearing technology, and e-motor component integration.

  • Drive a culture of innovation, quality, accountability, and technical excellence.

Key Focus Areas:

  • End-to-End Powertrain Component Design & Validation

  • Cost, Performance, and Durability Optimization

  • Mechanical Integration with ICE, Hybrid, and EV Platforms

  • Supplier and Manufacturing Interface

  • Global Team Development and Technical Governance

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related discipline.

  • 10–15+ years of experience in powertrain or component engineering, with 5+ years in a leadership role.

  • Proven track record in launching engine/transmission systems or hybrid drivetrain components.

Preferred Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of component failure modes, geartrain design, lubrication systems, sealing solutions, and driveline NVH.

  • Proficiency in tools like Creo, CATIA, ANSYS, AVL Excite, Romax, or equivalent.

  • Understanding of electrified powertrain systems (e-axles, DHTs, P2 modules) is a strong plus.

  • Excellent leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, and project management abilities.
