Director – Energy Systems Integration (Boiler-Water Interface)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Director – Energy Systems Integration (Boiler-Water Interface) is responsible for the strategic and technical leadership of integrated thermal energy systems, focusing on the critical interface between boiler operations and water systems (e.g., feedwater, condensate recovery, deaeration, and steam distribution). This role drives optimization of energy-water interactions for enhanced efficiency, reliability, and sustainability across utility plants and process industries. The director leads multi-disciplinary teams in projects related to system design, operational integration, and technology deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Integration Leadership:

    • Develop and implement energy-water integration strategies across boilers, feedwater systems, steam headers, and condensate recovery networks.

    • Optimize the interface between heat generation and water systems to reduce thermal losses and water consumption.

  • Design & System Optimization:

    • Lead engineering design reviews of boiler-feedwater systems, including deaerators, economizers, steam traps, flash tanks, and heat exchangers.

    • Evaluate and deploy advanced technologies for energy recovery, steam system balancing, and boiler efficiency enhancement.

  • Project Execution & Lifecycle Management:

    • Oversee engineering projects involving new installations, retrofits, and upgrades of integrated thermal and water systems.

    • Ensure that energy-water integration projects meet quality, safety, cost, and sustainability objectives.

  • Data-Driven Performance Monitoring:

    • Implement advanced instrumentation and analytics for real-time monitoring of boiler-water interaction metrics (e.g., blowdown rate, condensate recovery efficiency, cycle of concentration).

    • Use performance data to drive predictive maintenance and continuous improvement.

  • Sustainability & Decarbonization Support:

    • Lead initiatives for water-energy nexus efficiency, including fuel reduction, water reuse, and waste heat recovery.

    • Support the transition to low-carbon or renewable thermal systems where applicable.

  • Interdepartmental Coordination:

    • Coordinate efforts between energy, mechanical, water treatment, controls, and process operations teams.

    • Ensure smooth integration between utilities and core plant processes (industrial, manufacturing, or municipal).

  • Compliance & Best Practices:

    • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements related to boiler operations, steam system safety, and industrial water quality.

    • Promote best practices in condensate polishing, boiler water chemistry, and system reliability.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Boiler-Water System Interface Optimization:
Ensure seamless integration of steam generation and water treatment cycles for peak thermal efficiency and system reliability.

  2. Energy-Water Nexus Strategy:
Reduce operational costs and environmental impact by improving the thermal and water efficiency of utility systems.

  3. Condensate Recovery & Reuse:
Maximize condensate return, minimize boiler blowdown, and reduce freshwater demand through closed-loop optimization.

  4. Deaeration & Feedwater Quality:
Oversee high-quality feedwater delivery systems that prolong boiler life and enhance energy transfer.

  5. Advanced Monitoring & Control:
Implement instrumentation and digital solutions for continuous tracking and optimization of boiler-water performance metrics.

  6. Sustainability & System Decarbonization:
Drive heat recovery, emissions reduction, and energy transition strategies in boiler-water integration.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, Thermal Engineering, or a related field.

  • 15+ years of experience in steam generation, boiler systems, and water treatment operations, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or director-level role.

  • Deep knowledge of industrial boiler systems, feedwater treatment, steam distribution, and condensate recovery.

  • Experience in process integration, thermal audits, and energy optimization projects.

  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler Codes, water chemistry standards, and energy management systems (ISO 50001).

  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
